Carlos Yulo brings home the first gold medal for the Philippines and Southeast Asia at the 2024 Paris Olympics
The 2024 Paris Olympics have officially started for nearly a week, but Southeast Asia still hasn't won a single medal, even though names like Thu Vinh, Huy Hoang or most recently Tan Pearly - Thinaah Muralitharan (Malaysia) have fallen to the final line.
However, the medal thirst was relieved when athlete Carlos Yulo excellently won spectacularly in the performance event in gymnastics.
At the Bercy Arena men's runway in Paris, Carlos Yulo scored 15,000 points by executing a perfect sequence of moves combining high somersaults and complex spins with precision and confidence.
Outstanding performance of 15,000 points by "child prodigy" Carlos Yulo
It was even more impressive when he won the gold medal by defeating very strong opponents such as Artem Dolgopyat (Israel, 14,966 points, silver medal), Jake Jarman (England, 14,933 points, bronze medal).
This is the second gold medal in the history of the Philippines' Olympics, after Hidilyn Diaz's gold medal in the women's 55 kg weightlifting event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
It is even more special when Carlos Yulo's gold medal helps the Philippines surpass other "heroes" such as Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore... to win the first medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
At the age of 24 (born in 2000), Carlos Yulo still has the opportunity to hunt for more valuable medals for the Philippine team at the 2024 Paris Olympics, when he competes in another event on August 4.
