On the morning of October 8, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Department of Physical Training and Sports and the Vietnam Shooting Federation held a ceremony to honor Mr. Park Chung-gun - former head coach of the Vietnam shooting team.
At the ceremony, industry leaders acknowledged and thanked the Korean expert for his contributions over the past decade to Vietnam's shooting industry. Coach Park Chung-gun was also honored to receive the Third Class Labor Medal.
The Korean coach said: "I would like to thank those who attended and helped me have the honor to participate in the gratitude ceremony. For more than 10 years working here, I have always considered Vietnam as my second homeland. I have experienced successes as well as failures. Those are all beautiful memories.
I always believe that Vietnamese shooting will be more successful, instead of stopping at the achievements in the past. I also hope that Vietnamese shooting will invite more talented and excellent experts than me so that the shooters can win gold medals at ASIAD and Olympics. I always wish success for my students and colleagues."
Members of the Vietnamese shooting team say goodbye to coach Park Chung-gun.
Coach Park Chung-gun has achieved many successes with the Vietnamese shooting team. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, under the coaching method of Korean experts and Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhung, shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh excellently won the Olympic gold medal in the men's 10m air pistol event, before winning another silver medal in the 50m air pistol event. Park Chung-gun is still the only shooting coach to have won an Olympic gold medal with the Vietnamese team.
At the 19th ASIAD, he helped shooter Pham Quang Huy win a gold medal in the men's 10m air pistol event, and helped shooter Ngo Huu Vuong win a silver medal in the men's 10m standard air rifle event. At this Games, Pham Quang Huy, Phan Cong Minh, and Lai Cong Minh won another bronze medal in the 10m team air pistol event.
At the 2024 Olympics, Mr. Park Chung-gun kept his promise to bring Vietnam to the finals of the shooting event. Under the guidance of Mr. Park, shooter Trinh Thu Vinh, in her first Olympic appearance, reached the finals in both events. She finished in 4th place in the women's 10m air pistol event and reached the finals of the 25m sport pistol event.
After Coach Park Chung-gun’s contract expired at the end of August, the Sports Department was slow in renewing the contract with the Korean expert. When the Department sent a letter inviting Mr. Park to return to Vietnam to renew the contract, the coach born in 1966 refused the Department’s offer for personal reasons.
