University Admissions 2024: Opportunities for Candidates with Foreign Language Certificates

Many schools consider admission based on a combination of high school graduation exam scores and foreign language certificates.

The University of Economics - University of Danang enrolls 3,325 students. Of which, the school reserves the admission quota for high school graduates based on academic performance and foreign language proficiency. Specifically, to be considered for admission, candidates graduating from high school in 2024 need to have an IELTS certificate of 5.5 or higher or a TOEFL iBT of 46 points or higher. In addition, for the international regular bachelor's program, the school considers candidates graduating from high school in 2024 with an IELTS of 5.5 or higher or a TOEFL iBT of 46 points or higher within 2 years (by the deadline for submitting application documents) and with a total score of 2 subjects, including Math and another subject in Physics, Chemistry, Literature of 12 points or higher.

The University of Finance and Business Administration announces direct admission for candidates with a high school graduation exam score of 18 points or higher in a combination of 3 subjects and an international English certificate IELTS of 5.5 or TOEFL iBT of 46 points, TOEIC of 600 points or higher within 2 years (as of the closing date for application submission).

This year, the Academy of Journalism and Communication plans to reserve 15% of its combined admission quota for candidates with an international English certificate equivalent to IELTS 6.5 or higher, a minimum SAT certificate of 1200/1600, an average GPA of 5 semesters of high school from 7.0 or higher, and good conduct in high school (excluding semester II of grade 12).

In previous admission seasons, most schools only recruited students based on IELTS certificate results. This year, many schools announced admission methods using SAT and ACT scores. The enrollment trends of many universities in recent years show that candidates with foreign language certificates have many opportunities to be admitted. Not only foreign language certificates issued by foreign testing organizations, some Vietnamese universities also use "domestic" foreign language certificates. In response to many people's concerns about the misuse of English certificates in general admissions, and university admissions in particular, causing injustice in access to education, Dr. Vu Thi Phuong Anh, lecturer at the Faculty of International Languages and Cultures, Hong Bang International University (HCMC), said that she supports the use of foreign language certificates for university admissions because this is an inevitable trend, but there need to be accompanying solutions to ensure fairness for all candidates. Accordingly, it is necessary to pay attention to investing in improving the quality of foreign language teaching and learning in remote areas, and at the same time, have policies to support students in these areas so that they have the opportunity to access English equally.

Candidates are allowed to retake one IELTS test skill.

With the permission of the Ministry of Education and Training, in early April, the British Council and IDP announced that they would start the IELTS retest feature in Vietnam. IELTS OSR is a feature that allows candidates to retake a single skill if they do not achieve the desired score on the first attempt, instead of having to retake the entire test as before. Candidates can register to retake the IELTS test within 60 days after receiving the results of the first attempt.
