Although ranked 2nd in Group D and won 2 consecutive matches against Nepal and Bangladesh, coach Mai Duc Chung and his team still have to wait for the results of other matches to know whether they will continue or not.
In the following series of matches, the reigning AFF Women's Cup champion, the Philippines women's team, beat Myanmar 3-0, thereby entering the top 3 second-place teams with the best results along with Thailand and Uzbekistan.
The Vietnamese women's team also got 3 points, the same as the Philippines, Thailand and Uzbekistan in the ranking of the best second-placed teams. However, the Vietnamese women's team was behind the above teams in terms of goal difference, so it dropped to 4th place, thereby stopping at the group stage of ASIAD 19.
At the press conference after the match against Japan, coach Mai Duc Chung said: "The Vietnamese team really did not play well today, losing by a very large score. Congratulations to Japan on winning their third consecutive match.
The Japanese team is very strong, their victory is completely deserved. The Vietnamese team has competed in many tournaments this year, from March until now, the Olympic qualifiers, SEA Games, World Cup and ASIAD, so their physical strength is not guaranteed...
The team's strength at ASIAD also suffered many losses such as Huynh Nhu and Chuong Thi Kieu. These are the three most important issues leading to today's results."
The quarter-finals of the 19th ASIAD women's football tournament have determined the eight teams including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan (China), North Korea, China (top of the group) and the Philippines, Thailand, Uzbekistan (second of the group).
