Thanh Ba Youth "say no to cigarettes"

Tobacco not only directly affects the health of smokers but also affects the health of those around them, causing damage to the personal and social economy... Realizing that, in recent years, Thanh Ba District Youth Union has actively promoted the Law on Prevention and Control of Tobacco Harms (PCTHCTL), thereby creating a strong change in awareness and action for each union member, youth (YVTN) and the community.

Thanh Ba currently has over 6,600 Youth Union members operating in 30 Youth Union bases. Implementing the direction of Youth Union chapters at all levels on strengthening the prevention of tobacco harms among young people, over the past years, Thanh Ba District Youth Union has actively promoted and mobilized Youth Union members to "say no to tobacco", promoted dissemination and education to raise awareness for Youth Union members to understand the harmful effects of using tobacco products, which not only cause negative effects on their own health and those around them through "passive smoking", but also affect the economy, environment, and the benefits of quitting smoking and a smoke-free lifestyle.

Thereby, mobilizing young people to reduce the demand for tobacco and tobacco products, and at the same time, mobilizing relatives and family to "say no to tobacco". Strictly implement no tobacco use in meetings, weddings, funerals, festivals as well as public places.

At the headquarters of the Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee of communes and towns, to the cultural houses of residential areas, schools or public places, there are signs "Smoke-free Unit", "No Smoking" so that the Youth Union as well as the people know and voluntarily implement. Thanks to that, the rate of Youth Union smoking has decreased significantly.

Youth Union member Nguyen Khanh Hung, Thanh Ba town said: I always strictly follow the "say no to cigarettes" policy. In the past, I was often enticed and invited to smoke by my friends, but thanks to being equipped with knowledge about the harmful effects of cigarettes, I refused and encouraged my friends and relatives to quit smoking. I have been educated and promoted about PCTHCTL by teachers through extracurricular activities organized at school.

In addition, during the recent Summer activities, I was regularly propagandized and reminded by the members of the Executive Committee of the Residential Area Youth Union to implement the regulations on the Law on Tobacco Control, thereby clearly understanding the dangers of tobacco products to human health and the surrounding environment; at the same time, I was more aware of the responsibility of the Youth Union in propagating and spreading the implementation of Tobacco Control to everyone.

Along with actively propagating, disseminating education, raising awareness for young union members about the harmful effects of tobacco and the provisions of the Law on Tobacco Control, Thanh Ba District Youth Union has implemented tobacco control work in many practical forms, suitable to the actual conditions of the locality and unit. The District Youth Union has directed grassroots unions to include tobacco control content in annual, quarterly and monthly activity plans; directed union chapters at all levels to guide, inspect, urge and motivate cadres and young union members to not smoke according to the provisions of the Law on Tobacco Control.

Organize the signing of a commitment for 100% of union officials to not use banned substances and stimulants, including tobacco. Strengthen propaganda, dissemination and education on the Law on Drug Prevention and Control and related documents for union members and the people; integrate with programs and activities to propagate and educate on drug and stimulant prevention; promote propaganda on cyberspace through social networking applications such as Facebook, Zalo, etc.

Joining hands to implement PCTHCTL, in the coming time, Thanh Ba District Youth Union will actively innovate the content and methods of propaganda, implement emulation commitments among cadres, union members, and youth in the district and implement regulations on no smoking at headquarters, workplaces, schools, and public places. Promote propaganda on PCTHCTL in schools; direct school Youth Union bases to advise school principals to integrate PCTHCTL content in building school activity plans right from the beginning of each school year such as: Organizing students to sign a commitment not to smoke; integrating into extracurricular teaching programs to disseminate knowledge about the harmful effects of tobacco, cigarette smoke, etc.

Strengthen coordination with functional forces to organize propaganda sessions, disseminate laws on drug and stimulant prevention, including tobacco to young people in the district. With the motto that each young person is an active propagandist in propagating and mobilizing relatives and people around to say no to tobacco, thereby promoting the role of youth in spreading the implementation of building a smoke-free environment, contributing to improving the lives and health of everyone.
