In non-public schools, the bonuses for teachers and staff vary widely. Many schools try to find a decent bonus so that everyone can have a full Tet.

"Struggling" to pay salaries and Tet bonuses

These days, Ms. Nguyen Thi Cam Dan - owner of 2 kindergartens in Binh Tan and Tan Phu districts (HCMC) and her accountant review the revenue and expenditure to prepare about 1.2 billion VND to pay January salary and Tet bonus for more than 80 staff, teachers, employees and organize the year-end party.

According to Ms. Dan, this year's Tet, the facilities will keep the same bonus level as last year, equivalent to a 13th month salary. Specifically, the lowest level is 7 million and the highest is 11 million for teachers, and for managers it is over 20 million VND.

Ms. Dan shared that the general situation of non-public preschools this school year is that enrollment is not enough to meet the target. At the two facilities she owns, the total number of children is 380, only 85% compared to the previous school year. The number of children has decreased, but all expenses have increased, and teachers' salaries cannot be reduced, so the school has encountered many difficulties in the past time.

“Luckily, this year the Tet holiday falls at the end of January, so parents let their children study for the entire month. Like last year, the Lunar New Year holiday falls in the middle of the month, so many parents let their children take the entire month off, so their income decreases, so they have to struggle to pay for rent, salaries, insurance…”, said Ms. Dan.

With 30 staff, teachers and employees, Mr. Nguyen Quang Tiep - the owner of a kindergarten in Thu Duc City (HCMC) had to prepare more than 500 million VND to pay salaries and Tet bonuses to teachers. Accordingly, each teacher will be awarded 1 month's salary, along with a year-end party. In addition, on the first working day of the year, teachers will receive lucky money in the form of a lucky draw with an amount from 50,000 to 500,000 VND.

“This year’s Tet falls in late January and early February, so we are struggling to pay salaries and bonuses at the same time to have a full Tet and also to retain teachers. Because private preschools are quite competitive now, if we don’t give Tet bonuses, our staff won’t stay long term,” said Mr. Tiep.

Mr. Le Trong Duy - Principal of Ban Mai Kindergarten, Thu Duc City (HCMC) said that in the 2024 - 2025 school year, the number of children sent to kindergarten (12 - 24 months and 24 - 36 months) is less than previous years. This is also a common situation in schools. That partly affects teachers' income. However, the school still tries to balance so that teachers have a relatively high Tet bonus. Accordingly, teachers working at Ban Mai Kindergarten will receive a Tet bonus equal to 1 month's salary, the lowest is 8 million VND, the highest is 10 million VND.

Based on multiple criteria

In fact, in private schools, Tet bonuses or 13th month salaries are quite common. However, the amount of bonus depends on the revenue, performance and individual policies of each educational institution. The revenue of a private school is the deciding factor in the ability to pay salaries and Tet bonuses. With this Tet bonus, teachers have more motivation to work. In particular, prioritizing seniority helps teachers to be more attached to the school.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Quoc - Chairman of Nam Viet International Education Group (HCMC) said that although the economic situation in 2024 is difficult, greatly affecting many aspects of social life, including the group, Nam Viet still tries to take care of the staff, workers, and teachers of Nam Viet Primary - Secondary - High School to have the warmest and most complete Tet holiday.

“The Group has decided to spend about 2 billion VND to reward teachers and employees of the school during the Lunar New Year. The highest reward is expected to be 50 million VND, the lowest is the basic salary. The criteria for receiving the reward will be based on the assessment of diligence, productivity and efficiency. Individuals will self-evaluate, then submit to the groups and finally the school leaders will approve,” said Mr. Quoc.

Similarly, Ms. Pham Thi Thuy Vinh - founder of Ngo Thoi Nhiem Primary, Secondary and High School said that Tet bonuses are a motivation for teachers to be more committed to the school. Therefore, the school always pays attention to this policy.

“The Tet bonus for teachers this year ranges from 5 million to 20 million VND. Specifically, those who have worked for a full year will receive a bonus of 5 million VND. The bonus level depends on qualifications, seniority, position, dedication, and professional achievements. Notably, at the school, the salary policy is adjusted at the beginning of each school year. Accordingly, the lowest teacher salary is 14 million VND/month, the highest is more than 60,000 million VND/month,” said Ms. Vinh.

At Hong Ha Secondary and High School (HCMC), the bonus level for each teacher is different, depending on their seniority, professional qualifications and teaching ability. Ms. Ha Thi Kim Sa - Chairwoman of the School Board and Principal of the school said that teachers with good work performance, many students passed the university entrance exam last year will receive a good bonus. Those who have been with the school for a long time will also receive a commensurate bonus to increase their commitment.

“Currently, salaries and benefits, especially the additional income at public schools, are a big challenge for non-public schools. Therefore, in order to retain good teachers, last year, the school increased the salary fund and will soon increase the Tet bonus to help teachers feel secure in their work and have a full Tet holiday,” Ms. Sa shared.

“The Tet bonus level at private schools is not uniform and changes from year to year. To maintain stable revenue, schools need to focus on the quality of education and services, including good teachers, good curriculum, comprehensive support activities and especially modern facilities.

Investments in comfortable classrooms, safe playgrounds and learning support facilities not only improve the quality of education but also help schools attract more students. When revenue is stable, schools can ensure a worthy Tet bonus, motivating teachers to stay with the school," said Mr. Nguyen Van Ngai - former Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City.
