The Malaysian delegation participated in the 32nd SEA Games with 677 athletes. Before leaving for Cambodia, their goal was to win at least 40 gold medals. However, after 11 days of competition at the largest sports event in Southeast Asia, Malaysian athletes only won 34 gold medals, 45 silver medals and 96 bronze medals. During a meeting with the media, Datuk Mohd Nasir Ali also described the 34 gold medals they won as the best that the country's athletes could do.
Datuk Mohd Nasir Ali said: “I sincerely apologise for not achieving the target of 40 gold medals that we set. However, the 34 gold medals won are quality medals, and I believe we can improve our performance in the future. I think the athletes have tried their best.”
Datuk Mohd Nasir Ali said that Malaysian athletes tried their best at the 32nd SEA Games.
With 34 gold medals, this is the worst result of the Malaysian sports delegation at the Southeast Asian Games in 28 years. Previously, at the 1995 SEA Games in Chiang Mai, Thailand, the Malaysian sports delegation also competed unsuccessfully, winning only 31 gold medals. However, at that time, the Malaysian sports delegation was still in 4th place in the overall rankings, but at the 32nd SEA Games, they could only finish in 7th place.
Speaking further about the target of 40 gold medals set before leaving for Cambodia, Datuk Mohd Nasir Ali said that it was a realistic target. The leaders had 3 meetings and they based on the athletes' performance before coming up with this number.
“We have held three meetings so the goals we have discussed are realistic. The specific goals for each sport are already in place. We will come back after the meeting with the athletes in each sport and give a satisfactory explanation. The fact that many people are absent here does not mean that they are hiding from the media.”
Malaysian sports delegation will hold a meeting to report on achievements on May 19.
It is expected that on May 19, the meeting to report on the achievements of the Malaysian sports delegation at the 32nd SEA Games will take place in Kuala Lumpur. During the meeting, the Malaysian Minister of Youth and Sports, Hannah Yeoh, together with the President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria, will provide detailed information on the performance and achievements of the athletes at the 32nd SEA Games.
