Although it is not yet the peak season for preparing flowers for Tet, Mr. Trinh still comes to the garden early in the morning to water, prune, and care for each flower pot. “I used to be a teacher, but I especially love growing flowers and ornamental plants. More than 15 years ago, I started to grow flowers, mainly to satisfy my passion, but who would have thought that I would stick with this job until now. After retiring, I devoted all my heart and soul to taking care of this garden,” Mr. Trinh slowly said.
On an area of about 960 m2, he grows 1,500 pots of traditional chrysanthemums; 1,000 pots of Korean chrysanthemums along with some types of table flowers and hanging flowers. Quarter 1, Dong Giang ward is also known as "An Lac flower village", famous for its ornamental flower growing profession for decades. With a large number of households specializing in growing commercial flowers, this is the largest flower supplier for Dong Ha city in particular and Quang Tri province in general. In order to avoid "collisions" with other producers in the quarter, Mr. Trinh found his own way by choosing to focus on growing chrysanthemums and was successful from the first time.
Up to now, he has had 5 years of experience growing chrysanthemums. Answering the question of why he chose to grow this flower, Mr. Trinh shared: “Before me, almost no one in An Lac could grow chrysanthemums, because this is a flower that only grows in temperate climates. To sell this flower, traders have to buy flowers from the South and bring them to Quang Tri. During the transportation process, the flowers are no longer beautiful, and the transportation cost is quite high. So I decided to grow chrysanthemums right in Quang Tri after learning from experience from acquaintances and searching on the internet.”
For this type of flower to grow well, according to Mr. Trinh, soil treatment is the first step. “Because the rainy season in Quang Tri often lasts long, making the soil wet, this will be an environment for pathogens to grow. After treating the soil, taking care of the flowers will be easier,” Mr. Trinh said. Every day, he spends almost half of his time in the flower garden to live fully with his passion.
He personally trims the tops and takes care of the flowers to produce the most satisfactory finished product. Currently, a pair of chrysanthemums is sold by Mr. Trinh for 400,000 - 500,000 VND. After deducting expenses, each crop he earns about 120 - 150 million VND. Besides creating a good income for his family, he also creates seasonal jobs for some workers in the area.
Vice President of Dong Giang Ward Farmers' Association Hoang Thi Thu commented: "Mr. Trinh's model of growing raspberry chrysanthemums has brought about quite good economic efficiency and contributed to opening up a new direction for flower growing at An Lac Flower Cooperative. Besides being a good example of production and business of the ward and the city, Mr. Trinh is also an enthusiastic and open-minded branch president, always helping other members in the neighborhood to develop the economy, making the branch's movement increasingly better."
Mr. Trinh has been the Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Quarter 1, Dong Giang Ward since 2022. The entire association has 30 members, most of whom are in the An Lac Flower Cooperative. Promoting his role, in the past 2 years, he has made many efforts to help the production movement of members develop vigorously. From his success, he supported seeds and guided some members of the association to grow chrysanthemums and initially achieved positive results.
