Does studying pedagogy guarantee 100% employment?

Many students asked questions related to enrollment, training, and recruitment in the 2025 Exam Season Consulting program organized by Thanh Nien Newspaper in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Training, the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, the Department of Education and Training of Quang Binh and other educational units at Vo Nguyen Giap High School for the Gifted (Quang Binh).

The program is broadcast live on thanhnien.vn , Facebook.com/thanhnien and YouTube, TikTok Thanh Nien Newspaper with the support of high-speed transmission lines from VNPT Quang Binh and VNPT Hue.

During the program, Ms. Hoang Thuy Nga, senior expert of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training), said that the admission regulations are expected to be announced next week. Accordingly, the admission work will basically remain stable compared to 2024 and there will only be some changes in technical factors to ensure more fairness for candidates. In particular, an important new point is that this year candidates can register for university and college admission on the common system of the Ministry of Education and Training. For college level, candidates can register not only for preschool education as in previous years but also for all training majors of colleges.

Students of Quang Binh province enthusiastically participated in the Exam Season Consulting program which took place all day in the province on a large scale.

C SUPPORT AND REFUND POLICY

During the program, many students had concerns about job opportunities in teacher training (pedagogy). Notably, a student from Ngo Quyen High School (Quang Binh) asked: "Does studying pedagogy guarantee 100% job opportunities?". Master Dam Minh Anh, Deputy Head of Training Department of University of Education (University of Da Nang), said that currently, universities recruit pedagogical students based on the teacher recruitment needs of localities. Therefore, job opportunities for pedagogical graduates are almost 100% when training institutions are based on the actual needs of localities. Of course, specific job opportunities also depend on the seriousness of the students' study and training.

Regarding this industry, a student from Dong Hoi High School (Quang Binh) wondered: "When studying pedagogy, students receive a monthly allowance, but with the current job demand, we may not be able to find a job after graduation, so do we have to reimburse the training costs to the state?". Answering this concern, Master Hoang Thuy Nga said: "According to the regulations of Decree 116, students receiving support from the policy after graduation must work in the education sector within 2 years of graduation within the prescribed time. However, there are many different job positions in the education sector, not necessarily just teachers".

"According to current recruitment regulations, to become a teacher, you still have to take an entrance exam and pass the entrance exam to get a job, not just graduating and returning to your locality to get a job. Therefore, those who study pedagogy themselves must also make an effort," said Master Nga. Also according to Master Nga, according to Decree 116, students who receive support policies but do not work in the education sector within the prescribed time after graduation must reimburse the costs.

Students asked many practical questions to the consultants.

Providing more information about the attractiveness of teacher training majors, Master Hoang Thuy Nga said that these majors have received great attention from learners in recent years. While the training quota is only over 35,000, the number of candidates registering is very high, 1,250% higher than the quota. The admission score for this major has also increased steadily in recent years. "The advice for students interested in this field is to study the knowledge thoroughly to get the highest exam results, reaching the threshold to ensure input quality to participate in the admission according to regulations," Master Nga added.

B WORRYING ABOUT CHOOSING A CAREER IN THE NEW SITUATION

Also worried about her future job, Hong Van (Dong Hoi High School) asked: "I want to study law but recently I have heard a lot of information about the temporary suspension of recruitment at state agencies. Will this affect our future jobs?". Master Nguyen Xuan Huong, Head of the Admissions and Communications Team, University of Law (Hue University), shared that the state is currently restructuring the organizational structure of state agencies. At this time, state agencies are temporarily suspending the recruitment of new personnel. However, this is only temporary.

Meanwhile, student Cao Dinh Hieu asked: "I saw on social networks that psychology is very developed in the future and abroad. I want to ask if this industry will really develop in Vietnam?". Dr. Le Viet Nhiem, Vice Principal of the School of Medicine and Pharmacy (University of Danang), said that this year the school opened more clinical psychology and pharmaceutical chemistry majors. Of which, clinical psychology major has a 4-year training period and receives a bachelor's degree in psychology, focusing more on clinical practice at hospitals. After graduating, students can do many jobs, including becoming a clinical psychologist at medical facilities. According to the Law on Medical Examination and Treatment in 2023, people with a bachelor's degree in psychology after 9 months of practice at the hospital will have a certificate and become a clinical psychologist to work at hospitals.

Adding more information, Dr. Vo Thanh Hai, Permanent Deputy Director of Duy Tan University, said that choosing a major is very important, but the chosen major needs to be based on the intersection of three factors: interest, personal ability, and future job opportunities. Psychology currently has a very large demand for human resources, because according to forecasts in the next 10 years, an average of about 1,000 jobs will be needed each year. According to statistics, the average starting salary of psychology graduates is at least 12 million VND/month. "However, many job opportunities do not mean that graduates will definitely have a job if they are not fully equipped with the knowledge and skills of that major," Dr. Hai added.

Adding advice to students in choosing a career, Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Bui Bao, Vice Principal of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Hue University), said: "When choosing a career, try to follow your outstanding abilities and interests. Especially in the field of medicine and pharmacy, passion and love for the profession are very important. In addition, students need to research career trends in the next 5-6 years."

Dr. Co Tan Anh Vu, Deputy Director of Vietnam Aviation Academy, said that universities are currently making many changes in their training majors to adapt to changes in technology. Therefore, with today's changes in technology, students must consider their own abilities and whether they really like the major or not. Candidates should not only look at the name of the major but also look at the specific training program.

Special support policy of Quang Binh province for learners

Resolution of the People's Council of Quang Binh province in December 2024 stipulates the level of support for increased food expenses for students studying at ethnic boarding schools, semi-boarding schools for ethnic minorities and support for living expenses for students and students of ethnic minorities in the province. Accordingly, university students are supported with living expenses at the rate of 3.63 million VND/month; college students are supported with living expenses at the rate of 2.7 million VND/month; and intermediate students are supported with living expenses at the rate of 1.7 million VND/month.
