Due to the increasing demand for using Gymnema Sylvestre to support diabetes treatment in recent times, Minh Nhi Medicinal Herbs Production and Trading Facility, Dinh Son Village, Cam Nghia Commune, Cam Lo District, has started a trial planting of Gymnema Sylvestre in Cua area. This medicinal herb brings high economic efficiency, opening up prospects for developing new medicinal herbs, contributing to building Cam Lo into a medicinal herb center of the province.

The owner of Minh Nhi medicinal herb production and trading facility, Truong Cong Minh, said: “The Gymnema sylvestre plant, scientifically known as Gymnema sylvestre, is a vine with a woody stem, used as a medicine to treat “sweet urine” in traditional Indian medicine since 2,000 years ago.
In our country, Gymnema Sylvestre is mainly exploited naturally, and the cultivation of Gymnema Sylvestre has not been given much attention. In 2003, Nam Duoc Company Limited cooperated with Hanoi University of Pharmacy to bring Gymnema Sylvestre varieties to Hai Loc commune, Hai Hau district, Nam Dinh province for experimental planting, showing good growth and development ability. Since then, the model of growing Gymnema Sylvestre as a medicinal herb to support the treatment of diabetes has received more attention.
According to Mr. Minh, Minh Nhi medicinal herb production and trading facility is growing 2 medicinal herb models, including 7 sao of Solanum procumbens and 4 sao of Gymnema sylvestre (1 sao is equal to 500 m2). The growing process shows that Gymnema sylvestre is less susceptible to pests and diseases, and the harvest and sale bring quite high economic efficiency. According to calculations, on an area of 4 sao of home garden land, each year his family's Gymnema sylvestre is harvested 4 times, with a yield of about 10 tons of dry, worth about 80 million VND.
Meanwhile, the 7 acres of Solanum procumbens that his family has grown so far can only sell for about 80 million VND/year.
The economic efficiency per unit area of the plant is almost twice as high as that of the plant Solanum procumbens. Although the initial investment cost of the plant is high, it is a woody plant so the leaves and shoots can be harvested many times and are easy to care for.
If there are large resources for initial investment, about 15 million VND/sao, people can develop a good model of growing Gymnema Sylvestre in Cua area, Cam Lo district, bringing economic efficiency many times higher than other crops.
Currently, Minh Nhi Medicinal Herbs Production and Trading Facility is the first unit in Quang Tri province to successfully pilot the model of growing Gymnema Sylvestre, using seeds from the Institute of Medicinal Materials.
Regarding the technique of planting and caring for the Gymnema sylvestre, this is an easy-to-grow plant that can be harvested quickly. To plant Gymnema sylvestre, you need to choose high, well-drained, humus-rich, and loose land with a pH of 5-6.5. After preparing the soil, eliminating pests and diseases, making beds and hanging trellises for the Gymnema sylvestre to climb, it will take about 6-8 months to harvest. Planting once can yield harvests for over 10 years.
The raw materials for growing Gymnema Sylvestre are used by Minh Nhi Medicinal Herbs Production and Trading Facility to process into Minh Nhi Gymnema Sylvestre Medicinal Herbs Extract which is recognized as achieving 3-star OCOP, a typical rural industrial product of Quang Tri province. Thanks to that, the profit from the Gymnema Sylvestre medicinal herb growing and processing model is even higher.
To date, there have been thousands of studies on the effects of Gymnema Sylvestre in supporting the treatment of diabetes, reducing and stabilizing blood sugar levels. In addition, studies on the effects of Gymnema Sylvestre in stimulating the pancreas to produce more insulin, reducing the risk of increased blood cholesterol and weight loss.
Through research on the effects of Gymnema Sylvestre in supporting diabetes treatment, more and more diabetics are looking to buy Gymnema Sylvestre herbal extract products to use or buy dried Gymnema Sylvestre to boil water to drink.
