(Fatherland) - The exhibitions "Japanese Dolls" and "Dialogue with Ukiyo-e paintings" organized by the People's Committee of Hoi An City (Quang Nam) in collaboration with the Japan Cultural Exchange Center in Vietnam, bring unique colors of the combination between the breath of the past with the aesthetics and inspirations of the times to create creative works.
2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the Hoi An - Japan Cultural Exchange event; Hoi An City (Quang Nam Province) in coordination with localities, organizations and individuals in Japan brings to residents and tourists a series of new and unique activities taking place from August 2 to 4 to celebrate this meaningful milestone.
Opening the series of events, the exhibition “Japanese Dolls” at the Japanese Cultural Exhibition House (No. 06 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai) and the exhibition “Dialogue with Ukiyo-e paintings” at No. 39, Nguyen Thai Hoc Street; organized by the People's Committee of Hoi An City in coordination with the Japan Cultural Exchange Center in Vietnam; will bring unique colors of the combination between the breath of the past with aesthetics and inspirations of the times to create creative works.
Having become a cultural element of the Land of the Rising Sun, dolls are a familiar image and have long existed in the history of Japan. According to the Japanese concept, dolls symbolize luck, peace and happiness.
Traditional Japanese dolls come in many colors, styles, and are divided into many types for different social purposes.
Each doll creation is an emotional and intellectual work of art, expressing the artist's philosophy of life and world view.
Through many different stages, with ingenuity and meticulousness, artisans have breathed life into the work to create a unique beauty for each doll; therefore, these doll models all have high artistic and creative value.
This exhibition in Hoi An displays 29 traditional dolls, from dolls in gorgeous costumes to simple wooden Kokeshi dolls, carrying the pure beauty of wood.
This collection not only highlights the outstanding aspects of Japanese culture but also shows the beauty of the soul and spirit of a nation.

The exhibition “Dialogue with Ukiyo-e” (at 39 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street) is a new breeze of creativity based on inspiration from long-standing traditions. It is the story of a creative flow that is spreading, connecting in a further space, across countries, culture “dialogues” with culture.
Young, talented Vietnamese artists have deeply researched and harmoniously combined traditional Vietnamese culture with the famous Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock print. From ideas about familiar Vietnamese art materials such as Do paper, lacquer, silk... combined with the quintessential values in creativity as well as the Japanese spirit of the famous woodblock print, they have brought about unique creations, carrying the breath of the times, of individual creations based on inspiration from Japanese culture.
Through the exhibition, Hoi An is once again affirmed as a land of cultural convergence, a place that attracts experts, artists, and creators to settle down, live, and create. From there, the source of creativity is always preserved and continued on this land.
The exhibition “Japanese Dolls” and “Dialogue with Ukiyo-e” will be a space for the convergence of creative quintessence and the harmony of Vietnamese and Japanese national spirit. There, traditional values and creative culture will be an endless flow and spread everywhere in the world. Beyond the usual narrow explanations, creativity is limitless and the traditional culture of each nation is the pedestal, the driving force for other values to rise and shine.
