On September 14, Em Maison Kindergarten organized a joyful event to welcome the Mid-Autumn Festival with the theme "A Journey with Books to the Moon" with the participation of many parents and children. Here, Ms. Nguyen Tan Thanh Truc, Master of Information - Library at Simmons University (USA), author of the books Educating Children's Imagination , Small Lessons... shared interesting stories about books and notes for parents on creating a reading habit for their children as well as helping them choose suitable books.

Read books with your child to develop his or her imagination.

Master Truc said that creating a reading habit for children is easy to say but difficult to do. Parents should have a certain time frame to create a reading habit with their children, such as after dinner.

Parents and children listen to interesting stories about books from Master Nguyen Tan Thanh Truc

“Sometimes we are very busy with work or friendships but we should not ignore reading to our children. Because establishing discipline for children is a process, not something we can do today and not do tomorrow,” Master Truc advised.

Master Truc believes that in order to motivate children to read regularly, parents should remember the benefits of reading that other activities cannot fully provide. In particular, reading will help children improve their listening skills, help them concentrate and develop their imagination through stories.

In addition, reading helps children develop communication and emotional skills. Master Truc advises parents to ask questions after describing the details in the book to their children so that they can practice remembering. And when listening to children's answers, they must comment and reward to promote their confidence and comfort because children need motivation to be able to say what they think.

Parents can expand their children's vocabulary and develop their reading comprehension by introducing concepts, explaining word meanings to their children, helping them connect new knowledge, string together events, and explain phenomena in stories.

How to choose books and tips for reading good books

Giving some suggestions for parents to choose books to read with their children, Master Truc advises to choose books related to children's interests and pay attention to children's interests at each stage. At the same time, choose books with eye-catching illustrations, explore what children can learn from that book, and avoid choosing books with too many difficult concepts...

Master Nguyen Tan Thanh Truc tells the story "The Adventure of the Baby Sea Dragon" which he composed.

According to Master Truc, to keep your child with you while reading, parents should find a comfortable, quiet space to concentrate. Before reading to their child, parents should read the book to find out what attracts their attention, and from there, know how to attract the child from page to page until the end of the story.

In addition, parents should not ignore the interesting pictures or designs of the book, but stop to let their children observe and learn about those pictures. Then, ask and answer questions with the children to satisfy their curiosity and increase the interaction between the children and the story.

Sharing about this issue, Ms. Le Thi Lan Anh, Principal of Em Maison Kindergarten, said: “Many parents share that they do not know how to play with their children, to understand their children and parents want their children to talk and tell them more. Hopefully, through this event, parents have suggestions to easily accompany their children in reading books. Through the stories in the book, I find ways to open up and connect with real-life stories, making children feel comfortable, so that they can talk to their parents."

Attending the talk, Ms. Mai, parent of Tuong San (3.5 years old), said: "My child has been used to having his parents read books since he was 2 years old and at home there is also a bookshelf for him. When telling stories, his parents often describe the animals in the story for him to see, which he really likes."

In addition to games and entertainment for children on the occasion of Mid-Autumn Festival, kindergartens also have integrated educational activities. This year, Nguyen Du Kindergarten (Ha Tinh) let children make small gifts to send to the people in the North who are suffering from the effects of storm No. 3. Qua Chanh Vang Kindergarten (HCMC) organized activities to learn about why there is a Mid-Autumn Festival, learn about Mid-Autumn Festival cuisine, and exercise to the theme music "Full Moon".
