Former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney has won the race to become leader of the ruling Liberal Party and will succeed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Reuters on March 10 cited voting results showing that Mr. Mark Carney won 86% of the total votes, defeating former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland to become leader of Canada's Liberal Party.
Former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney to become new prime minister
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in January his intention to step down as prime minister and leader of the ruling Liberal Party before this year’s general election. Trudeau cited distracting internal politics as the reason and said Canada deserved a real choice in the next election.
Fewer than 152,000 Liberal Party members cast ballots to elect a new leader. The party leader will become prime minister and serve out the remainder of Trudeau’s term. Canada’s next general election is due by October 20.
Polls earlier this year suggested the opposition Conservatives were on track to win, regardless of who became the next Liberal leader. However, many polls now show a tie, with neither party likely to form a majority government.
Veteran economist
Mark Carney (60 years old) is a veteran economist, the first person to lead two major central banks. Mr. Carney studied at Harvard University and Oxford University, worked for Goldman Sachs before joining the Canadian Ministry of Finance in 2004. He was Governor of the Bank of Canada from 2007-2013. He is considered to have played a major role in helping Canada avoid the worst impact of the global financial crisis that began in 2007.
He served as Governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020. He also warned of the economic damage if Britain left the European Union (EU), also known as Brexit, which was fiercely attacked by Brexit supporters. The UK officially left the EU in 2020 and Mr. Carney also left the Bank of England that year. He was later appointed as the UN special envoy for climate and finance. He is currently Vice Chairman of Brookfield Asset Management.
He is the only serious candidate not to join Justin Trudeau’s government. Mr. Carney has been considered a potential candidate for the Liberal leadership for years because of his prominent record in finance. He resigned from all his external positions before running in January.
During the election campaign, Mr. Carney said he supported retaliatory tariffs against the United States and a strategy to increase investment. He repeatedly complained that Canada's growth under Mr. Trudeau was not good enough.
Speaking after his victory, Mr. Carney accused the US under President Donald Trump of trying to take over Canada, an effort that Mr. Carney said must be defeated, according to AFP.
"Americans want our resources, our water, our land and our country. Mr. Trump is attacking Canadian workers, families and businesses. We cannot let him succeed," Mr. Carney said.
