Hue City: Preserving and promoting the value of Gia Hoi ancient town

(PLVN) - Gia Hoi Ancient Town (Gia Hoi Ward, Phu Xuan District, Hue City) used to be the busiest area of Hue Capital in the early 19th century. Over time, the priceless heritage of this ancient town is fading away day by day. Faced with this situation, the preservation and promotion of the value of the ancient town is receiving attention from the government and the people.

Gia Hoi ancient town was formed under the Nguyen lords, and by the 19th century had become the largest and most bustling commercial area of the capital Hue. History has left Gia Hoi ancient town with a diverse heritage, including ancient houses, palaces, communal houses, pagodas, assembly halls, etc., creating a unique and distinctive structure, alongside intangible heritages of traditional festivals and traditional crafts (making powder, making mirror paintings, making kites, lanterns, etc.).

According to statistics, Gia Hoi ancient town currently has about 83 architectural works including palaces and private houses of Nguyen Dynasty mandarins, religious and belief architectural works, ancient houses... However, this heritage system has been degrading at many different levels, gradually losing its ancient features due to the impacts of urbanization, harsh weather and many other factors.

Ms. Le Thi Lien (born in 1952, owner of the old house on Bach Dang Street) said that she has lived in this old house since she was a child, since her great-grandfather left it to her: “My house is one of the few houses that is still almost original from the past. Over time, the old houses here are gradually disappearing.”

Researchers and cultural organizations have proposed solutions. Among them, we must mention the research project on traditional residential architecture in the Gia Hoi - Dinh market area to propose preserving and promoting its value; the project to restore and promote the value of the ancient urban area of Gia Hoi - Dinh market of the Institute of Urban and Rural Planning (Ministry of Construction)...

Dr. Phan Thanh Hai, Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Hue City, said that this is a land with many famous historical and cultural relics, quiet, silent and with little change in development. "How to make Gia Hoi develop is a big question, a concern of many people, from generations of leaders to people, those who love Hue. Decades ago, the Hue City government was determined to preserve and promote the Gia Hoi ancient town but it has not been successful yet," said Mr. Hai.

In a study by the Hue City Development Research Institute on Gia Hoi ancient town, a direction was proposed to both preserve and develop this quarter. In particular, it is necessary to build a database of information systems on tangible and intangible cultural values of Gia Hoi ancient town as a scientific basis for research, collection, digitization, and documentation of valuable architectural works. In addition, it is necessary to orient the development of trade, tourism, and services on the basis of the unique culture of the ancient town.

Currently, Hue City has been implementing the city's general planning, Hue City urban development planning, preservation and restoration planning of the Hue Monuments Complex... therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to the detailed planning of the Gia Hoi area. Because this is the first step, which has a decisive meaning for the right and sustainable development. Next, there needs to be worthy investment to preserve, exploit and promote the rich heritages in Gia Hoi area, creating conditions and creating connections so that all people in the area can fully develop their capacity and strengths in exploiting and promoting cultural resources and heritages.
