Attending the ceremony were former President Nguyen Minh Triet; Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Thanh; Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Van Nen; Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Nguyen Van Duoc, along with representatives of departments, branches and enterprises.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Bui Xuan Cuong emphasized the importance of the pedestrian bridge project across the Saigon River.
"The pedestrian bridge project has a special location in the city center, so it must meet high aesthetic requirements with a design shaped like a water coconut leaf - a typical leaf of the Southern region, creating a unique architectural feature and will be a symbol of Ho Chi Minh City," said Mr. Cuong.
In addition, the Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee also requested the Department of Transport and Public Works and related units to closely coordinate with sponsors, contractors, and construction units to ensure progress and quality, safety, aesthetics, and environment.
According to Tran Quang Lam, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport and Public Works, the city has completed the construction of Thu Thiem Bridge, Ba Son Bridge, and the Saigon River Tunnel connecting District 1 with Thu Thiem. Up to now, we continue to invest in the pedestrian bridge project across the Saigon River to gradually complete infrastructure connections and speed up the completion of the Thu Thiem new urban area.
“The Saigon River plays a role as the axis of sustainable development, ecology and tourism of the city. The Thu Thiem new urban area (Thu Duc city) is oriented to become an international financial, commercial and service center. Therefore, the pedestrian bridge across the Saigon River will add important connecting infrastructure, along with projects such as Thu Thiem bridge, Ba Son bridge and Saigon river tunnel.” - Mr. Lam shared.
Also at the ceremony, Mr. Tran Thanh Hai - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nutifood, the unit that sponsored the construction of the pedestrian bridge across the Saigon River, shared that with investment capital entirely from private enterprises, this project is like a symbol of the private economy contributing to the development of the country.
According to the design, the bridge has a total length of 720m, a width of 6-11m, a river span of 187m, a clearance of 80m, and a height of 10m. The project has two connection points, on the District 1 side at Bach Dang wharf park (125m south of Me Linh construction site), and on the Thu Duc City side at Thu Thiem riverside park (intersection of Nguyen Thien Thanh and N14 streets).
This bridge has a special design because it simulates the shape of a water coconut leaf floating gently on the river. This architecture is considered to create a strong impression when combining the simple traditional features of the South with the modernity of Ho Chi Minh City today.
The total investment capital of nearly 1,000 billion VND is built according to the architectural plan of the Chodai - Takashi Niwa and Chodai Kisojiban Vietnam joint venture. Nutifood is the financial sponsor. The project is expected to be completed in April 2026.
The bridge is equipped with an artistic lighting system, an ETFE roof and public utilities such as elevators, escalators... The artistic lighting system brings a modern and sparkling appearance, promoting tourism and nighttime entertainment activities in Ho Chi Minh City.
After completing this bridge, Ho Chi Minh City also plans to organize many community activities such as music festivals, water music shows, yoga, and outdoor cinemas in the pedestrian bridge area on special occasions or weekends.
