President Trump: Microsoft giant is negotiating to buy TikTok

(Dan Tri) - President Donald Trump said that the giant Microsoft is in negotiations to consider acquiring TikTok in the US.

On January 27, US President Donald Trump confirmed to the press that Microsoft is in talks to buy TikTok's US business. This negotiation marks the second time Microsoft has entered into an effort to acquire TikTok, after negotiations failed in 2020.

"I can confirm that's true. There's a lot of interest in TikTok," President Trump said. The news that Microsoft and Oracle wanted to buy TikTok appeared in the media a few days ago.

However, Microsoft declined to comment on this information. TikTok and its Chinese parent company ByteDance have not responded to the White House owner's statement.

Earlier, the US President said he was in talks with several organizations about buying TikTok. He expected a decision on the fate of this short video app to be made in the next 30 days.

According to NPR, a group of American investors, including Oracle and possibly Microsoft, will take control of the app from ByteDance. ByteDance may retain a minority stake, while Oracle will oversee TikTok's algorithms and data collection.

That means US investors will own a majority stake in TikTok, but the terms of the deal are subject to change and are still being negotiated.

TikTok, which has about 170 million users in the US, was down for about 12 hours on January 19, before the ban took effect.

Under the Protecting Americans from Foreign-Controlled Apps Act (PAFACA), parent company ByteDance must divest TikTok or the short-video app will be banned in the US by January 20.

However, shortly after taking office, President Trump signed an executive order to delay the implementation of the law for 75 days. However, US officials warned that this would prolong the risk of American data being abused by ByteDance.

President Trump previously said he was open to letting US billionaire Elon Musk buy TikTok. However, billionaire Musk has not yet publicly commented on Trump's offer.

TikTok’s revenue in the US was $1 billion in 2020, according to data firm Statista. By 2023, that number will increase to $16 billion, according to data from the Financial Times.
