By the first half of August, pangasius exports to the UK reached 38 million USD.

Since the beginning of 2024, pangasius exports to a number of markets have recorded many positive signs of recovery. However, the UK is one of the few markets that has reduced the import value of pangasius from Vietnam.

According to Vietnam Customs, pangasius exports to the UK market reached 3.5 million USD in the first half of August 2024. Cumulative exports up to August 15, 2024 reached 38 million USD, down 8% over the same period.

While most markets are recovering demand for Vietnamese pangasius, the UK is one of the few markets that has seen continuous negative growth since the beginning of this year. This country only increased pangasius imports by 19% in the first month of this year, with a value of more than 5 million USD. From February 2024 to the end of July 2024, pangasius export turnover to the UK continuously decreased by double digits from 12% to 24% compared to the same period.

Despite the decrease in value, the export volume of pangasius to the UK in May 2024 still recorded positive growth of 68%, reaching more than 1,700 tons. In the previous two months, the export volume of pangasius to the UK also increased slightly by 8% in March and 4% in April 2024. In the months of February, June, July 2024, the export volume of pangasius to the UK decreased by 31%, 5%, 21% respectively. The total export volume of Vietnamese pangasius to the UK reached nearly 9,000 tons, a slight increase of 8% over the same period, mainly due to the increase in January and May 2024.

The average export price of pangasius to the UK in the first 7 months of 2024 increased and decreased unevenly, with the highest level recorded at 3.2 USD/kg in the first 2 months of the year. After that, the price continuously decreased and grew slightly positive compared to the same period in June and July 2024, reaching 2.67 USD/kg and 2.9 USD/kg, respectively.

The UK is one of the markets that imports a lot of value-added pangasius from Vietnam. By the end of July 2024, exports of this product to the UK reached nearly 3 million USD, up 5% over the same period in 2023. July 2024 is the month when this market consumes the most value-added pangasius, with nearly 600 thousand USD, up 65% over the same period. Exports of value-added pangasius to the UK recorded positive growth.

Although pangasius exports to the UK in the first 7 months of this year witnessed a decline, mainly due to a decrease in frozen pangasius fillet imports, value-added pangasius products are gradually gaining more attention and popularity among consumers in this country.

To penetrate and expand the UK market and effectively take advantage of the benefits brought by the UKVFTA, businesses need to grasp the regulations on new market standards and consumer trends to improve technology, product quality and design; invest in and use modern digital marketing tools and means to enhance product promotion; actively participate in international fairs and exhibitions in the UK.
