Extracting added value, establishing AmCham-style association to expand US market

In-depth analysis of added value in the production process, establishment of associations similar to AmCham or EuroCham, purchase of patents, etc. are suggested as solutions to help Vietnamese enterprises participate in the US market more effectively.

A closer look at the data

Sharing at the seminar "US market information, assessment of economic and trade development trends in 2025" held on February 11, Mr. Nguyen Manh Quyen, Head of the Vietnam Trade Office in Houston (Texas, USA) said that analyzing import data as well as evaluating advantages and comparing competitiveness in the economy is a fundamental issue.

For example, when buying an iPhone, the physical content of raw materials may not be large, but the product has a very high added value. On the contrary, to produce a ton of rice, although it is physically heavy and requires a lot of sweat and effort, the value obtained is not commensurate.

Therefore, Mr. Quyen believes that it is necessary to analyze two dimensions to infer and compare added value in the stages of production and business of products, instead of just evaluating the trade surplus or trade deficit.

"If we only look at one way of saying that we export too much and need to reduce it or export too little and need to increase it, then that is just a commercial view and does not create great added value for sustainable development in society," Mr. Quyen shared.

Agreeing with the above viewpoint, Dr. Huynh The Du said that analyzing the overall picture of business sectors is important.

This requires a concentration of resources and intelligence, especially from those who understand the US market and international trade, to make a comprehensive assessment.

At the same time, Mr. Du suggested forming a mechanism for sharing information and exchanging knowledge according to the model of "buying with friends and selling with partners".

One possible direction to consider is to build Associations with the capacity to connect businesses and promote and advocate policies such as AmCham or EuroCham.

"One of the things that businesses doing business in the US need to do is to have the ability to lobby for policy," said Mr. Du, adding that this is also an organization that can analyze and recommend appropriate policies to the Vietnamese government.

Find multiple entry points into the US market

Mr. Kieu Huynh Son, Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Mechanical and Electrical Enterprises Association, said that through organizing and participating in exhibitions in the US, he has seen many positive signals and assessed this as a potential market with high demand.

However, the challenge is to expand access beyond traditional methods such as exhibitions and online exchanges. Mr. Son suggested leveraging support from partners, associations and the Vietnamese Trade Counselor in the US to seek more networking opportunities.

For example, we can consider organizing a Vietnam Electrical Engineering Week , creating opportunities for a delegation of 20-30 businesses from Vietnam to participate, helping Vietnamese businesses access the US market more directly and effectively.

In addition, experts also suggest that Vietnamese businesses seek to buy back patents or cooperate with companies that own technology copyrights to produce together in Vietnam, serving many markets, including the US.

In an interview with Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Vu Tu Thanh, Deputy Executive Director of the US-ASEAN Business Council, said that acquiring patents or cooperating in production is a solution to increase cooperation between businesses of the two countries.

These designs still have a certain market, but because the profit is lower than the new product lines in the group, they are not prioritized for development.

"The important thing is that the buyer must be knowledgeable to find good and suitable products, then bring them back to refine, add their own intelligence and create products that meet a certain market segment," said Mr. Tu Thanh.
