VHO - On the morning of November 23, Thua Thien Hue province held a ceremony to receive the title of National Intangible Cultural Heritage "Knowledge of Tailoring and Wearing Hue Ao Dai". This is the fourth national intangible cultural heritage of this locality.
On August 9, 2024, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Decision No. 2320/QD-BVHTTDL announcing the List of National Intangible Cultural Heritage for "Knowledge of Tailoring and Wearing Hue Ao Dai". This is a common heritage of the community, held by the community and joined hands to protect and promote its value.
The Five-panel Ao Dai, the predecessor of the modern Vietnamese Ao Dai, was born in Dang Trong, closely associated with the history of the formation and development of the land of Thuan Hoa - Phu Xuan. This is the result of the creativity of Vietnamese people on the way to the South, expanding the country's territory to the South.
Since 1744, the 8th Nguyen Lord, Nguyen Phuc Khoat, decided to choose this type of clothing as the regular clothing for all the people of Dang Trong (from Gianh River, Quang Binh to the end of the present-day Southern region).
In the early 19th century, during the period of national unification, Emperor Minh Mang continued to choose the Five-panel Ao Dai as the common costume for all Vietnamese people. During the period from 1837-1945, the Five-panel Ao Dai was very popular in both the North and the South, and was considered the national costume of the Vietnamese people.
Over a period of more than 300 years, generations of Hue artisans have accumulated a lot of knowledge about making and wearing Ao Dai. It is not simply a matter of clothing but has especially clearly symbolized the system of aesthetic values and moral and ethical standards of society.
In modern life, Hue Ao Dai is still used by many people, most commonly by students, civil servants, young people, and even middle-aged and elderly people, women doing small business in shops, in the market...
Mr. Phan Thanh Hai, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Thua Thien Hue province, said: In recent years, the Department has launched and promoted the preservation and revival of traditional ao dai (including both men's and women's ao dai) not only in the community but also in state agencies.
The cultural sector has made efforts to research, develop and implement the project "Hue - Capital of Vietnamese Ao Dai" with many rich contents. On March 29, 2023, the People's Committee of Thua Thien Hue province issued a decision approving this project, creating a legal basis for the effective implementation of activities to promote and honor Hue Ao Dai, promote economic and tourism development, affirm Hue Ao Dai in the international community, aiming to develop the brand "Hue - Capital of Ao Dai".
Many Hue Ao Dai tailoring shops are concentrated in the areas of Gia Hoi, Kim Long, Vi Da, Phu Cam... These are lands with long-standing historical and cultural traditions, densely populated areas and home to families and clans with a tradition of tailoring Hue Ao Dai.
Nowadays, the tradition of making and wearing Ao Dai is enhanced and embellished by famous Hue Ao Dai designers and tailors such as Tan Nghiep, Minh Tan, My Le, Tham, Hung, Doan Trang, Phuc, Thao Trang, Viet Bao, Quang Hoa, Thanh Chau, Xuan Thi, Phuong Hoa, Thuy Trang, Cuoc, Truong Anh Hao, Bich Thuy, Hong Dao, Dan Phuong, Tuan, Minh Tien, Anh Bao...
The technical steps of cutting, sewing, hemming, and buttoning are all carefully taken care of by artisans and tailors. Therefore, the ao dai is not simply a garment but a work of art, containing the cultural identity of Hue.
Hue Ao Dai is a synthesis of the fields of weaving, sewing, embroidery, painting, design, fashion, truly a cultural product, aiming to be a cultural industrial product to serve tourism. Fast tailoring services for tourists are developed, places to rent Ao Dai, take photos with Ao Dai are increasing day by day... Thereby, contributing to increasing revenue for businesses and creating a premise for the sustainable development of the Ao Dai tailoring profession.
“Thua Thien Hue is promoting the sustainable development of cultural industries. Designing and tailoring Ao Dai is both a handicraft and a special creative design industry, creating impressive and highly popular products. Not to mention the many types of accessories and jewelry that go with the Ao Dai,” Mr. Phan Thanh Hai emphasized.
In addition, the Ao Dai cultural industry also creates conditions for the development of other industries such as the production of souvenirs, toys, accessories, cinema, fine arts, etc. This is the direction for the development of the cultural industry, serving domestic and export needs, creating jobs, bringing revenue to businesses, increasing income for people, while preserving and spreading the values imbued with Hue's cultural identity.
The leaders of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Thua Thien Hue province also informed that in the coming time, they will continue to make efforts and determination to preserve, promote and further spread the value of Ao Dai in contemporary life. At the same time, they will propose to the provincial leaders and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to allow the construction of a scientific dossier "Knowledge of tailoring and wearing Ao Dai Hue" to submit to UNESCO for consideration of recognition as a representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
