Steel prices on the exchange

Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for July 2025 delivery rose 17 yuan to 3,673 yuan/t.

Iron ore futures fell as investors awaited details on economic reform measures from top consumer China’s third meeting, after a series of weaker-than-expected data stoked demand concerns.

The most-traded iron ore contract for September on China’s Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) was 0.96% lower at 824 yuan ($113.41) a tonne, after rising more than 1% on Monday.

Benchmark iron ore for August delivery on the Singapore Exchange fell 1.51% to $107.2 a tonne.

Analysts expect debt reduction and boosting confidence to be the main focus of the third plenum in Beijing this week, although addressing one of those issues could make it difficult to fix the other. The plenum is a key Communist Party leadership meeting focused on long-term economic reform.

Hopes for more stimulus have risen after China's second-quarter economic growth and new bank lending in June missed expectations.

Property prices in 70 Chinese cities continued to see “credible” declines in June, although some key tier-1 and tier-2 cities saw prices stabilise, ING analysts said.

More policy support is expected in the coming months as stabilizing the property market is an important step towards restoring confidence, ING added.

The drop in ore prices is also on expectations of more ore arriving in the coming weeks.

One of the world's top iron ore suppliers Rio Tinto reported a 3% increase in iron ore exports in the second quarter compared to the same period three months ago thanks to improved weather conditions.

Total imported iron ore inventories piled up at 45 major ports in China rose 2,300 tonnes from the previous week and hit their highest in more than two years from July 5 to 11, data from consultancy Mysteel showed.

Other steelmaking raw materials on the DCE were mixed, with coking coal down 0.5%, while coke rose 0.6%.

Steel futures on the Shanghai Futures Exchange were flat. Stainless steel rose nearly 0.5%, hot-rolled coil rose 0.05%, rebar fell 0.35%, and flat steel.
