The owner of many inventions and innovations related to artificial intelligence in digital healthcare affirms that an excellent scientist with valuable technologies can completely become rich with his own intelligence.
However, material wealth is not the destination on the research journey of young doctor Pham Huy Hieu (born in 1992, from Nam Dinh). Exactly 10 years since graduating from university, Dr. Hieu now owns a "fortune" of 70 articles, including more than 20 articles in Q1 magazines.
The young lecturer of VinUni University is also the main author of a cluster of 3 scientific works cited and exploited by more than 700 research groups around the world; and is the author and co-author of 5 technological solutions with high scientific and practical value. Thanks to these contributions, he became the youngest person to be honored with the Golden Globe Award in 2023.
Dr. Pham Huy Hieu was a student at Hanoi University of Science and Technology. In 2015, after graduating, he won a full doctoral scholarship from the French government to study Computer Science at the University of Toulouse. After completing his doctoral program with honors, despite having many attractive job opportunities abroad, he decided to return home.
“Actually, I had already planned to return when I first set foot in France to study. Young people everywhere have their own ways to contribute to the country, but if I return, I will be able to directly participate in the process of developing technology and solving problems for the Vietnamese people,” he explained.
The field that Dr. Hieu wants to pursue upon his return is the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in smart healthcare. According to him, if successfully developed, these applications will create a huge impact, because advanced medical technology is often expensive, not everyone can access and benefit from these services.
In addition, it also addresses public health challenges in Vietnam, such as the disparity in doctor qualifications between regions, the ratio of doctors per 1,000 people, or the problem of infrastructure not meeting the increasing demand for medical examination and treatment.
Fortunately, when he returned, many universities, research centers and technology corporations began to invest in building a professional research environment. He was assigned to the position of research expert and head of the basic research team at the Big Data Research Institute (VinBigData).
In the early stages of research in the new field, Dr. Pham Huy Hieu encountered many challenges, especially the lack of basic knowledge about medical data and the progression of diseases.
“Understanding data is a key factor in the success of low-cost models. Fortunately, these are interdisciplinary studies that require the participation and expertise of many scientists in many fields. Working with a large network of doctors and medical experts, I have learned a lot from them,” he said.
Most of Dr. Hieu's research revolves around the desire to create smart medical technologies that are low-cost and accessible to everyone. Among them, VAIPE - a smart healthcare monitoring and support system for Vietnamese people is one of the solutions that he has devoted the most effort and expectation to.
This application helps collect, manage and analyze personal data such as heart rate, blood pressure, medication taking behavior and be more proactive in taking care of your health. In addition, the application can also make predictions and health risks so that people can get early examinations and improve treatment capabilities.
“This research direction is also part of the global medical trend of shifting from treatment to early diagnosis and preventive medicine,” said Mr. Hieu.
As a scientist with 70 publications, including more than 20 in Q1 journals, Mr. Hieu and his colleagues' contributions have helped collect and standardize large-scale medical databases and define new problems in the field of smart medicine. This helps the scientific community to exploit, test and evaluate new AI algorithms.
However, he always believes that science has no end. “The destination of science for me is not the number of articles or inventions but the positive impact on people's lives,” he said.
Therefore, Dr. Hieu's greatest wish is to continue building a strong research team with high expertise, capable of competing internationally right in Vietnam. In addition, he also wishes to continue conducting in-depth research and putting research results into practical applications, creating new changes and values.
“Artificial intelligence is developing at a rapid pace, opening up huge potential in developing smart medical applications. Therefore, I aim to integrate medicine and engineering into an interdisciplinary science, helping doctors diagnose faster and more accurately, thereby helping people improve their health and quality of life,” said Dr. Pham Huy Hieu.
Dr. Pham Huy Hieu is a lecturer at the Institute of Computer Science and Engineering, and a research expert at the VinUni-Illinois Smart Health Center, VinUni University. He also holds the role of Scientific Director of the VinUni Entrepreneurship Center (E-lab).
He has won many prestigious awards such as the Golden Globe 2023, Promising Young Vietnamese Face 2023, VinUni Rising Star in Research Award 2024 and many international scientific research awards.
Recently, Dr. Hieu was included in the list of 19 individuals nominated for the "Outstanding Young Vietnamese Faces" award in 2024.
