More than 71,000 kumquat pots serving the Tet market in the kumquat capital of the Central region have been almost all ordered by traders, with prices slightly increasing compared to last year, promising a bumper crop.
Cam Ha Commune (Hoi An City, Quang Nam) is considered the kumquat capital of the Central region. There are about 300 households specializing in growing kumquat trees. With less than three weeks to go until the Lunar New Year 2025, Cam Ha farmers are busy pruning branches, painting pots, and waiting for the day to hand over to traders.
According to locals, this year's Tet kumquats are big, round and beautiful.
Excitedly watering the pots of golden fruit trees, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Cuong (born in 1989) shared that this year his family has planted 1,500 pots of Tet kumquat trees. So far, all the trees have been ordered by traders from Da Nang, Hue, Quang Tri, Quang Binh, etc., with prices ranging from 500,000 to 2.5 million VND per pot.
Hoi An kumquat village is busy preparing for the biggest business season of the year.
Mr. Cuong's family is one of the households that grows the most kumquat trees in Hoi An.
Compared to last year, the price of kumquat this year increased by about 5-10%, helping his family earn about 2.5 billion VND.
“Most of the kumquat trees here have been booked early by traders and taken care of, just waiting for the day to bring the truck to pick them up. After deducting expenses, my family has made a profit of more than 500 million VND,” Mr. Cuong revealed.
According to Mr. Cuong, unlike kumquat trees grown for Tet in the North, kumquat trees in Hoi An are grown from small trees in the fields for about two years. In the third year, from the 9th to the 10th lunar month, the trees are transplanted into pots.
This year, due to unfavorable weather, with a dry summer and prolonged cold rain near Tet, gardeners must always be on hand to provide timely technical intervention to ensure the kumquats are large, beautiful, and ready to serve Tet.
These days, gardeners are busy taking care of and ensuring the plants are beautiful before handing them over to traders.
Kumquat growers use rope to tie the branches together to create shape and distribute the fruit evenly.
With 10 years of experience growing kumquat trees, Nguyen Viet Gioi (born in 1979) is working hard with a group of workers these days to prepare kumquat pots to hand over to traders.
This Tet, his garden has 400 kumquat pots of various types and has sold more than 90%, earning about 500 million VND.
“This year, the price of kumquats has not fluctuated much compared to previous years, but traders have placed orders early. Up to now, most of the people here have sold almost all the kumquats in their gardens, leaving only a small amount to retail to local players and to bring to competitions,” said Mr. Gioi.
Some ancient kumquat trees and bonsai kumquat trees are rented out by garden owners during Tet for 3-10 million VND. Before being handed over to customers, the kumquat trees are repotted.
From Da Nang to Hoi An to order kumquats to prepare for Tet, Mr. Nguyen Te Nhan (born in 1977) said that this year he ordered more than 300 large kumquat pots with a total value of nearly 500 million VND.
After paying the deposit, he left the tree for the garden owner to take care of and planned to bring it back to sell at the flower market on Hoang Thi Loan Street (Lien Chieu District, Da Nang City) on December 17 of the lunar calendar.
In some gardens, growing kumquat trees not only helps garden owners "harvest" during Tet but also creates jobs for many local people when this is the time when the trees need the most care.
Traders have deposited and consigned kumquat pots for the garden owner to take care of until near Tet before "handing over".
In Cam Ha, there are many people who specialize in making pots for garden owners, priced at 30,000-700,000 VND/piece depending on size.
Depending on the stage of kumquat tree growth, garden owners will hire workers to take care of the trees. The closer to Tet, the more workers are hired, each day they are paid from 250,000-400,000 VND/person.
Speaking with VietNamNet reporter, Mr. Mai Thanh Hung, Vice Chairman of Cam Ha commune, said that on the occasion of the Lunar New Year, the locality supplied the market with about 71,000 pots of kumquat trees of all kinds.
Currently, more than 75% of the kumquats here have been ordered by traders. If the remaining kumquats are sold, local people can earn about 45 billion VND.
