Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh receives Indonesian President-elect

On the morning of September 14, at the Government Headquarters, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto, who is on a working visit to Vietnam.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh congratulated Mr. Prabowo Subianto on his election as President of Indonesia for the 2024-2029 term with high confidence; welcomed the President-elect's visit to Vietnam in the context of the two countries celebrating the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Strategic Partnership, towards the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations (1955-2025). The visit also demonstrates the close affection, trust, and determination of the two countries to promote cooperation, sustainable development, for peace, stability and common prosperity.

The Prime Minister congratulated Indonesia on its 79th National Day; congratulated Indonesia on its remarkable achievements, becoming the largest economy in Southeast Asia and the 16th in the world, with guaranteed social security; believed that the Government and people of Indonesia would continue to achieve great achievements in the country's construction and development, achieving the goal of becoming a developed country on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its founding (2045), with its role and position in the region and internationally increasing.

The President-elect of Indonesia congratulated Vietnam on its National Day and expressed his deepest condolences over the serious damage caused by Typhoon Yagi. The President-elect expressed his admiration for the indomitable and resilient spirit of the Vietnamese people in the struggle for national independence as well as in national construction and development; affirmed that he highly valued and would make every effort to promote the traditional friendship and strategic partnership with Vietnam to develop more and more strongly in all fields.

The two leaders agreed that over the past nearly seven decades, the bilateral relationship, founded by President Ho Chi Minh and President Sukarno, has developed strongly and extensively; especially after upgrading the relationship to a Strategic Partnership in 2013. Political understanding and trust have deepened, cooperation in all areas has developed more comprehensively and effectively; the two sides have actively coordinated and supported each other at multilateral mechanisms (United Nations, ASEAN, Non-Aligned Movement, etc.). Accordingly, the two sides agreed on a number of major orientations to effectively exploit the potential for cooperation in all areas, bringing the Strategic Partnership to increasingly deeper and more substantial development, and soon bringing the bilateral relationship to a new height, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 80th anniversary of the National Day of the two countries.

Accordingly, the two sides agreed to continue to increase delegation exchanges, high-level contacts, all levels and channels (Party, State, Government and people-to-people exchanges), effectively implement bilateral cooperation mechanisms to enhance trust and contribute to removing difficulties in all fields. The two sides believe that they will soon achieve the target of 18 billion USD in bilateral trade turnover; agreed to coordinate to remove difficulties, reduce trade barriers, facilitate the implementation of trade promotion activities and access to each other's commodity markets, including agricultural products and Halal products.

The Prime Minister affirmed that Vietnam is ready to cooperate and support Indonesia in ensuring food security; proposed to soon sign a rice trade cooperation agreement; asked Indonesia to facilitate Vietnam's agricultural products and Halal products to access the Indonesian market; supported Vietnam in removing the IUU yellow card in the fisheries sector. The Indonesian President-elect wishes to promote cooperation with Vietnam in food security, energy security, and high technology; and hopes that Vietnam will share its experience in agricultural development.


The two sides agreed to encourage and facilitate businesses of the two countries to invest conveniently in the market.

The two leaders also agreed to deepen cooperation in other important areas such as defense - security, maritime cooperation, fisheries cooperation, building digital partnerships, including cross-border e-commerce, digital transformation; preventing and combating transnational crimes and other forms of cybercrime, supporting information technology enterprises; enhancing cooperation in cultural exchange, people-to-people exchange, aviation connectivity and local connectivity.

The two leaders also discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern; agreed to strengthen cooperation, consolidate solidarity, central role and common views of ASEAN on regional security issues, including the East Sea issue; promote sustainable and equitable development of sub-regions in the region, including the Mekong sub-region. The Prime Minister suggested that Indonesia continue to coordinate closely with Vietnam to maintain solidarity, common stance and ASEAN's achievements on the East Sea issue, promote substantive and effective COC negotiations in accordance with international law, especially the 1982 UNCLOS.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh asked Indonesia to pay attention, support and send high-level representatives to attend the ASEAN Future Forum 2025 and the Partnership for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030 Summit (P4G) held in Vietnam in 2025.
