Indian Prime Minister Modi "sweeps" 3 countries in 5 days, explores new cooperation opportunities

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Nigeria today, November 17, beginning the first visit by an Indian head of government to the West African country in 17 years.


In a post on social media X , the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said: “Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Abuja, Nigeria. Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike warmly welcomed the Prime Minister and presented him with the “key to the city” of Abuja. The key symbolizes the trust and respect that the people of Nigeria have for the Prime Minister.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made this historic visit at the invitation of the host country's President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Earlier, Mr. Tinubu posted an article on X network, expressing his desire to welcome the Indian leader.

“Our bilateral discussions will seek to expand the strategic partnership between our two countries and enhance cooperation in key areas. Welcome to Nigeria, Prime Minister Modi,” Tinubu wrote.

Responding to the Nigerian President's post from his official X account, Prime Minister Modi shared photos of himself getting off the plane and meeting officials and people there.

“Thank you, President Tinubu. Just landed in Nigeria not long ago. Thank you for the warm welcome. May this visit deepen the bilateral friendship between our two countries,” he wrote.

According to the Indian leader, this will be an opportunity to “build on our strategic partnership based on a shared belief in democracy and pluralism.”

This is Prime Minister Modi's first visit to the West African region. Nigeria is the first destination on a five-day trip to three countries, including Nigeria, Brazil and Guyana.

After Nigeria, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Brazil to attend the 19th G20 Summit. On the final leg of his trip, he will visit Guyana from November 19-21 at the invitation of President Mohamed Irfaan Ali. This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the South American country in more than 50 years.
