On Truth Social, Mr. Trump stated: "It was an extremely productive call, we agreed on many issues, and will meet immediately after the upcoming election in Canada to discuss factors related to politics , business and all other areas."
The phone call took place amid tensions between the two countries over tariffs and other threats from the US leader.
On March 27, local sources said that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney convened a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Canada-US relations to discuss options to deal with the US's punitive tariffs on goods imported from Canada.
US President Trump previously announced that he would impose a 25% tariff on all cars manufactured outside the US starting April 2.
On the same day, March 27, US President Donald Trump announced that he could impose higher tariffs on the European Union and Canada if the two sides cooperate to "cause economic harm to the US".
Carney said the latest tariffs were a “direct attack” on Canada and its autoworkers. He said the relationship between the two countries was “in the process of unraveling” because of President Trump. However, Carney said he was confident that Canada would overcome the crisis and “build a stronger, more resilient economy.”
The Canadian Automobile Manufacturers Association, whose members produce about 60 per cent of all vehicles produced in Canada, is advising Prime Minister Carney's government to impose immediate retaliatory tariffs on the United States following new tariffs that Mr Trump has said he will impose on foreign-made cars and light trucks.
