Conflicting information in Harry - Meghan's near-accident case

Insiders gave conflicting accounts of Harry and Meghan nearly getting into a car accident while being "chased" by New York paparazzi.

A spokesperson for Harry and Meghan said the car carrying the couple and Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, was "dangerously pursued by aggressive paparazzi" on the evening of May 16. The pursuit on the streets of New York lasted nearly two hours, nearly causing collisions with other vehicles, pedestrians and two police officers.

The incident reminded many people of the 1997 Paris car accident that killed Harry's mother, Princess Diana.

However, in an interview on the British ITV channel on May 18, a photographer involved in the incident accused the group of people in Harry and Meghan's car of causing the dangerous situation.

“It was stressful trying to catch up with their car,” said the photographer, who asked to remain anonymous. “They were trying to cut in front of them and do other things to stop what was happening. Their driver made it a horrible experience.”

According to this photographer, Harry and Meghan's driver "drove fast, cut lanes and drove on the wrong side of the road".

The incident occurred while Harry, 38, and Meghan, 41, were in New York for an awards ceremony. A source close to the couple said about six cars were following the couple's car and the chase could have ended in an accident.

A New York police spokesman said paparazzi made it difficult for Harry's group to move around, but "there were no collisions, summonses, injuries or arrests reported".

The New York Post quoted a source as saying there was no emergency call to police about the incident and the chase "certainly did not last two hours".

Meanwhile, Chris Sanchez, a member of Harry and his wife's security team, told CNN that the chase was very dangerous.

"I've never seen or experienced anything like this," Sanchez said. "What we were dealing with was chaos. There were times when people were in danger, and it could have been deadly."

Harry's relationship with the media has long been strained. He blames the media's intrusion on his personal life for the death of his mother, Princess Diana, who died in a car crash in Paris, France, in 1997 while fleeing paparazzi.

Harry and his wife left the British royal family in 2020 and moved to the US. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex make money through book deals and documentary films. Harry's memoir Spare , published earlier this year, revealed a lot of information about British royal life, focusing on the conflict between Harry and his brother William.

Harry returned to England this month for the coronation of King Charles III. However, he only attended the main ceremony at Westminster Abbey, not the official reception and photo op at Buckingham Palace with the royals. He quickly returned to the US to celebrate his 4-year-old son's birthday.
