However, African swine fever remains a major concern for the Vietnamese livestock industry, especially in Son La province. Since the beginning of the year, the disease has occurred in 107 groups and villages in 148 communes, wards and towns of 11 districts and cities, forcing the destruction of 2,351 pigs, with a total weight of over 92.8 tons. There are still 11 communes in 5 districts that have not passed 21 days to declare the end of the epidemic.
Faced with the complicated epidemic situation, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Son La province has deployed a series of epidemic prevention measures to protect pig herds and limit losses for farmers.
Specifically, the Department has stepped up propaganda on biosafety measures, barn hygiene and adequate nutrition for pigs, in order to improve resistance and prevent disease. At the same time, the Department also requires pig farmers to strictly implement disease prevention measures to prevent widespread spread.
In addition, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Son La province has distributed chemicals and lime powder to households to disinfect and clean barns, preventing the spread of disease. The Department also instructed families to destroy sick pigs according to regulations, limiting economic losses and ensuring environmental hygiene and safety.
To strictly control the epidemic situation, the Department has closely monitored the epidemic situation, detected early and thoroughly handled the outbreak. The Department also advised the province and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to deploy vaccination in key areas, to create immunity for pigs and effectively prevent epidemics.
In particular, the Department has directed the disinfection of vehicles entering and leaving the epidemic area and allocated nearly 10,000 liters of chemicals to localities to disinfect livestock barns at the epidemic households and surrounding households.
Mr. Lu Van Truong, Deputy Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fisheries of Son La province, said that the Department has been making every effort to control the epidemic and ensure the safety of the pig herd. However, to defeat African swine fever, the whole society, especially the farmers, needs to join hands.
Farmers need to raise awareness of disease prevention, strictly comply with regulations on biosafety and barn hygiene, and proactively report promptly to veterinary agencies when detecting unusual signs in the pig herd.
With the joint efforts of the government, professional agencies and livestock farmers, it is hoped that the Vietnamese livestock industry will soon repel African swine fever, stabilize production and restore the market.
