More joy in life from loving poetry

In early spring, when the highlands of Bac Ha were immersed in the white color of Tam Hoa plums, I happened to meet Mrs. Dang Thi Nguyet Anh, 75 years old, in Bac Ha 2 residential group, Bac Ha town, Bac Ha district at the Spring Newspaper Festival. For poetry lovers and book lovers like Mrs. Anh, this is an opportunity to satisfy their passion for reading and gain useful knowledge from books, newspapers, and magazines from all over the world.

Talking about her life, Ms. Anh softly said: I was born in Thai Binh but went to Lao Cai to work since 1977. After decades of working as a preschool teacher, I retired. In 2003, I moved to Bac Ha to live. Every day, I read books, write poems, and participate in cultural and artistic activities with elderly friends in the area. That brings me joy in life.

Ms. Anh has loved reading, collecting and composing poetry since her youth. She often writes six-eight poetry, sometimes she also writes free verse. More than 30 poems is not a large number, but for someone who always devotes all her time and energy to her family and social work like Ms. Anh, this is a treasured collection that she is extremely proud of, cherishes and preserves. Each poem written is her confidences about life, about her love for her homeland, her country, her hopes for a bright future...

Talking about her poetry-loving friend, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Dung, 71 years old, in Bac Ha 2 residential group, Bac Ha town said: Like Mrs. Anh, I love reading and reciting poetry. I cannot write poetry like Mrs. Anh, but I know a lot of poems and can recite them to my old friends. For elderly people like us, being lucid and maintaining our passion is a great joy.

“I have been away from my hometown for too long, and I no longer have any relatives by my side. For me, it is my love of poetry that keeps me in life. I do not have enough money to buy many books, so I really appreciate the books that I receive as gifts or collect. There are books and poetry collections that I have kept for decades. I know the poems in them by heart and am ready to participate in poetry recitation whenever the neighborhood association has exchange activities or performances,” Ms. Anh added.

Mr. Vu Van Dich, Head of Bac Ha 2 Residential Group, Bac Ha Town said: In our residential group, there are many elderly people, but people with special circumstances who are very carefree, love life and always actively participate in cultural and artistic activities of the residential area like Ms. Anh are quite rare. We always encourage and create conditions for Ms. Anh as well as the elderly to participate in many community activities, exchange and share joy.

The peaceful and beautiful land of Bac Ha is a place that nurtures souls who love life and poetry like Mrs. Anh. In her old age, poetry not only holds her to life but also becomes a connecting thread with the community and with like-minded friends. Perhaps, thanks to that, amidst all the difficulties, Mrs. Anh still maintains her love of poetry, her beautiful soul and her love of life.
