On the occasion of "Cashless Day June 16", the Payoo payment platform has recorded the milestones of cashless payments in many fields, through statistics in the first 6 months of 2023 compared to the same period last year.

Accordingly, bill payment is an area that shows a strong determination in innovating the payment structure. By completely stopping the home collection team and switching to connecting with specialized units such as banks and payment intermediaries, electronic payment activities have soon reaped proud achievements.

Cashless payments are becoming popular in the F&B industry.

Specifically, according to the Northern Power Corporation, the rate of customers paying electricity bills without using cash by the end of April 2023 reached 85.11%, exceeding 5.84% compared to the target assigned by EVN in 2023; revenue through non-cash payment channels reached 96.34%. Meanwhile, with the synchronous implementation of solutions for collecting electricity bills without using cash, in 2022, the rate of customers paying electricity bills without using cash of the Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC) reached 98%, exceeding the plan assigned by Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) by 13%.

Data from Payoo shows that bill payments have shifted from direct to online payments since right after the pandemic. Specifically, in 2019, people still maintained the habit of paying bills at stores near their homes - accounting for more than 80% of the proportion, while online payments accounted for only nearly 20%. When the pandemic broke out, people were forced to switch to online payments and gradually became familiar with the convenience, speed, and diversity of this form. The rate of online bill payments has increased steadily every year, now nearly 3 times higher than before the pandemic.

In the F&B sector, cashless payments in the first half of 2023 doubled in quantity and 25% in value compared to the same period. Meanwhile, the supermarket sector recorded a growth of 64% in quantity and 32% in value compared to the same period.

For hospital fees, Payoo cooperates with many partners to deploy payment services for more than 30 hospitals including Cho Ray, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Dentistry, Traditional Medicine, Nguyen Tri Phuong, Military Hospital 175, Oncology... The growth of hospital fee payment transactions via Payoo increased 3 times in quantity and 2 times in value compared to the same period last year. Patients and their families can choose to make appointments and pay for medical examination and treatment conveniently with a variety of different methods: domestic cards, international cards, QR code scanning via banking applications, e-wallets.

In the public service group, in addition to the National Public Service Portal, Payoo provides payment services to local departments, agencies, and branches, supporting localities to better serve people with public administrative services. After a period of implementation, Payoo has seen impressive growth in cashless transactions in these units, 2.3 times in quantity and 1.8 times in value compared to the same period. This proves that the efforts of the government, banks, financial institutions, and payment intermediaries in promoting people to make cashless payments have initially achieved positive results.

New Payment Methods: QR Leads the Way

Contactless payments via QR and contactless cards are becoming increasingly popular with users due to their convenience and security.

People use QR codes when shopping

According to information from the Payment Department (State Bank), as of the end of March 2023, payment via QR code increased the most with 160.7% in quantity and 43.8% in value; via POS increased by 37.5% in quantity and 32% in value. In particular, only counting the Payoo payment platform, the value of QR payments through the partner network in the first quarter of the past year on both online and POS channels has grown 2 times compared to the same period last year. The proportion of QR payments in payment methods in many fields exceeds 30%.

In which, the top 5 fields with the highest number of QR transactions in order are: Food services; Fashion, cosmetics; Supermarkets and convenience stores; Furniture and household appliances; Other retail stores.

Contactless payments using physical cards via near-field communication (NFC) technology have also grown rapidly over the past year. In the first 6 months of 2023, the number of contactless card transactions tripled compared to the same period last year.

In addition, the cashless payment track does not only include traditional cards, contactless cards, and e-wallets, but is now more diverse thanks to digital gifts (eVoucher). This form has recently emerged, contributing to the movement towards a cashless society. For businesses, digital gifts are simpler and more economical. For users, digital gifts are more civilized and modern, and can be converted according to their needs in a wide gift catalog with hundreds of brands.
