Vibrant colors

The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism (DOCST) of Dak Lak province informed that March 2025 will be a special period of local festivals, connecting along the main event axis, from the 50th anniversary of Buon Ma Thuot Victory to the 9th Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival.

It is expected that there will be 34 unique cultural tours taking place throughout the province, most of which are programs built from local facilities, associated with the traditional indigenous culture of the ethnic groups in the Central Highlands.

For example, white water rafting events, "conquering" the Serepok River; dugout canoe racing on Lak Lake; attending festivals, watching elephants with M'nong elephant riders; exploring Buon Don - the legendary land...

Mr. Lai Duc Dai, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, shared that the events and activities are organized based on the actual spring festivals of the indigenous people. In the history of the Central Highlands, March has always been a time with many cultural echoes, when the mountains and forests are truly in spring, and the villages begin a new production season. The festivals are held with the hope of a new year with better results, favorable weather, bountiful crops, and more wealth. The Buon Don Elephant Festival will select the strongest elephants and find talented and brave elephant riders. The Lak Lake boat racing festival will evoke the majestic image of the red-earth boys, standing tall in the sky and earth... Reenacting these activities is also a manifestation of the solidarity and efforts of the community, together building a rich and beautiful homeland, with more and more glorious shades...

In particular, 2025 marks the efforts of the local cultural tourism industry when it has mobilized travel agencies to design specialized coffee tours, bringing unique experiences to visitors from near and far about the typical agricultural product of the Central Highlands. Accordingly, there will be experience programs to learn about coffee culture, grasp the process of growing and processing coffee and cocoa according to processes from primitive to modern. Accompanying these experience tours are the cultural activities of the indigenous people, taking care of coffee, picking flowers... and singing together to praise life.

Build cultural plans

Mr. Tran Hong Tien, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Dak Lak, acknowledged that the spring festival activities in March are therefore always a precious gift that local people want to share and introduce to visitors. Over the years, festivals recreating traditional customs and practices, especially traditional cultural festivals of ethnic groups, have always been maintained regularly with that spirit.

The limitation of these festivals is that they are usually small in scale, mainly organized by grassroots levels, and even spontaneous. Therefore, most festivals have limited scope of dissemination, are not organized professionally, have not really enhanced their position and value, especially the cultural content with depth and have not really become typical cultural products, unique tourism products, and have not properly honored spiritual and cultural values.

“We believe that in order to develop the current orientation of cultural tourism, to increase the attractiveness of festivals and improve the effectiveness of organization, there needs to be direction and synchronous participation of Party committees and authorities at all levels. The cultural and tourism sector identifies that festivals are both activities that contribute to preserving and honoring traditional cultural identities, and must also be attractive tourism products that attract visitors,” said Mr. Tran Hong Tien. From this perspective, Mr. Tien said that he is working with cultural and tourism management levels to consult, research, develop and immediately apply solutions and plans to further enhance festivals. The cultural sector will pay attention to strengthening communication, information sharing, organizing large-scale social mobilization in a more professional manner and trying to organize festival activities regularly and periodically. Each facility and locality needs to base on its strengths to choose the most unique festivals, focus on investing and organizing with the orientation of "each locality having a tourism product associated with traditional indigenous cultural festivals".

Mr. Tran Hong Tien analyzed: The inevitable advantage of Dak Lak, the Central Highlands, is that it has a culture of hundreds of years, hidden in the history of past development, which clearly exists in every forest and kitchen corner. The people of the Central Highlands are proud, brave, and natural, there is no reason not to boldly introduce themselves, step out and shine their own humanistic and indigenous cultural values. Building cultural plans, annual festival activities, linking unique traditional values with the materials of life, updating the sophistication and rationality from modernity and civilization will create tourism products associated with unique, distinctive and attractive culture...
