Jim Ratcliffe's plan has been met with much criticism. |
MU recently announced a campaign called "Project 150", with the goal of winning the Premier League title and being in the Champions League race in time for the club's 150th anniversary.
Butt, speaking at the Champions for Children Gala Dinner, said: “To be honest, and I don’t like to talk nonsense, it’s not going to happen. Everyone thinks the other clubs are standing still, but they’re progressing. Newcastle, Liverpool, City, Chelsea, Arsenal are all progressing.”
Butt also stressed that the current season is “a disaster” and that United need to rebuild from the ground up, including stabilizing the upper echelons, reforming the scouting team and supporting the new coach to upgrade the squad.
In addition to poor performance, MU also caused controversy when it increased season ticket prices by 5% and forced hundreds of fans to leave their long-standing seats to make way for a new VIP ticket area behind the coaching bench at the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand.
Legend Ryan Giggs, who also attended the event, said: "My friends have been sitting there for 25 years and now they don't know where to go. They have their names printed on the seats. That's the most disappointing thing for me."
Butt agreed, criticising the club's business strategy: "Ticket prices keep going up without results. I understand they need to balance their finances, but it's clearly hurting their most loyal fans."
Despite having to cut costs across the board, from laying off staff, cancelling Christmas parties to cutting Sir Alex Ferguson's ambassadorial role, MU still announced plans to build a new £2 billion stadium to replace Old Trafford. The preliminary design has caused controversy with its shape being likened to a giant circus.
Giggs said frankly: “I don’t think the design will be kept. If we have to build a new stadium, it has to be the best. United have always been at the forefront of facilities but now we are falling behind."
