Every Duanwu Festival, ash sticky rice cake is often present on the offering tray in the kitchen of every Vietnamese family.

The cake has a standing triangle shape, which can be explained according to the yin and yang of the five elements. The triangle shape represents the yang Fire on the outside surrounding the yin Earth of the cake inside.

The color of the cake also symbolizes the color of the earth. Returning to the earth, the yin and yang interact to grow and develop. That is the logic of creation.

People throughout Quang Nam have a tradition of wrapping ash cakes to celebrate the Doan Ngo Festival. The leaves are picked from the mountains and transported to the plains. The sticky rice is soaked thoroughly with carefully filtered sesame ash. The cakes must be wrapped evenly and firmly, ensuring that the leaves do not break after boiling, and have a beautiful triangular shape. The time for the sticky rice to be soft enough to blend with the ash and the color of the leaves is about 6 hours.
