The Southwest region possesses many rich indigenous cultures and diverse ecosystems with mangrove forests, islands, national parks, nature reserves, etc.

With abundant resources, many localities here have developed unique types of tourism, contributing to attracting a large number of tourists.

In fact, many provinces and cities in the Southwest have proactively developed new tourism programs and product packages with good service quality to enhance the experience of tourists, diversify products and increasingly improve service quality. However, there is still much to be done to exploit the existing potential and advantages more effectively...

Diversified products and types of tourism

In recent days, Mr. Nguyen Ba Vu's vineyard located at the foot of Da Ban stream in Cua Duong commune, Phu Quoc city, Kien Giang province has been bearing fruit, welcoming hundreds of visitors to visit and take free photos every day. When tourists have a need, Mr. Vu sells grapes at prices ranging from 50,000-100,000 VND/bunch, depending on the size. Passionate about agriculture and wanting to create an ecological tourist attraction, Mr. Vu has experimented with growing Thai jackfruit, guava, apples and grapes on 10,000 m2 of his family's land.

Like Mr. Vu, during the development process, many tourist attractions in Phu Quoc have constantly innovated, creating more attractive products to attract tourists. From the available advantages, this island city has formed and developed a variety of tourism products, gradually meeting the needs and tastes of tourists. Some examples include: Vinpearland amusement park; VinWonders amusement park; Safari Phu Quoc wildlife conservation and care area; Hon Thom cable car, the longest over-sea cable car in the world...

According to statistics from the Kien Giang Department of Tourism, in the first six months of 2024, the whole province is estimated to welcome more than 5.4 million visitors to visit and relax, with revenue from tourism activities of about 13,394 billion VND, an increase of 27.7% over the same period in 2023. Favored by nature with many beautiful and famous landscapes, Kien Giang province promotes sustainable tourism development, making tourism a key and breakthrough economic sector of the province under the motto "Each citizen is a tourism ambassador". Director of the Kien Giang Department of Tourism Bui Quoc Thai said that the province strengthens regional linkages, linkages between localities in the province, between the province and localities at home and abroad to form tourism growth drivers, products, and specific tourism product chains of each locality.

In An Giang, cultural-spiritual tourism has become a famous "brand" of this province for many years with attractions such as: Sam Mountain National Tourist Area; Cam Mountain Tourist Area..., in which, Sam Mountain National Tourist Area with Ba Chua Xu Temple of Sam Mountain in Chau Doc city is the largest spiritual tourist area in the Mekong Delta. Here, each year, more than four million visitors come to visit and worship. Ba Temple connects vertically with Thoai Ngoc Hau Tomb, Tay An Pagoda, Hang Pagoda, creating a difference and characteristic of river tourism products, contributing to building the An Giang tourism brand.

In the first six months of 2024, An Giang province welcomed more than seven million visitors, an increase of 16% over the same period in 2023, with total tourism revenue estimated at about VND8,000 billion, an increase of 105%. "The province is gradually exploiting and building new, modern tourism products that increasingly meet the needs and tastes of tourists. For example, trekking tourism combined with exploring and experiencing Cam Mountain; colorful raft village tourism at the Chau Doc river junction combined with learning about the cultural life of the Cham community in Chau Phong...", said Le Trung Hieu, Director of the An Giang Provincial Trade and Investment Promotion Center.

In Dong Thap province, local tourism was formed later than the national tourism industry, but with practical and appropriate methods, Dong Thap tourism has now established its position in the Mekong Delta region and the whole country. In recent years, Dong Thap tourism has maintained its position in the top 4 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region in terms of visitors. In 2023, the province attracted 4.034 million visitors and tourism revenue reached 1,925 billion VND. To achieve this initial success, Dong Thap province has had many creative ways, focusing on developing eco-tourism and agricultural tourism, tourism associated with organizing major events, etc.

The Sa Dec Flower and Ornamental Festival in Dong Thap Province, held for the first time at the end of 2023, attracted more than 245,000 visitors, demonstrating a great attraction, beyond the scope of a provincial festival. In the past three years, Sa Dec City has maintained the organization of many festival activities throughout the year, such as: Peace Festival, Independence Festival, Spring Flower Festival, Flower and Ornamental Festival and New Year Festival.

According to Vice Chairwoman of the Sa Dec City People's Committee Vo Thi Binh, festivals are held throughout the year and not concentrated on Tet. Each festival is held at a time appropriate to the context and event so that tourists can easily remember. Another breakthrough in stimulating tourism that Dong Thap has implemented quite successfully is the Lotus Festival, held every two years. This is a provincial-level event, bringing unique characteristics of the culture of the Mekong Delta region.

Looking at the number of visitors, it can be seen that tourism in the Mekong Delta always has a great attraction. However, it is also necessary to recognize that tourism development in the Southwest region is still not commensurate with its potential; tourism promotion and advertising still have certain limitations...

Continue to promote tourism stimulus

Surrounded by the Tien and Hau rivers, as well as other provinces in the region, Dong Thap has a lot of potential and rich tourism resources, especially eco-tourism, agricultural tourism and community tourism. However, in the past, agricultural tourism products in Dong Thap have not been really unique, have not had clear cultural characteristics, so have not attracted visitors, especially international visitors. Calling for investment in the tourism sector is still limited, there are no investors with great potential to invest in the tourism sector.

Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Dong Thap province Huynh Thi Hoai Thu said that by 2030, Dong Thap will focus on developing sustainable tourism on the basis of green growth, linking tourism development with agriculture, rural areas, OCOP products and indigenous cultural resource values, and strengths of each locality.

The province will form new tours and tourist routes within the province and between provinces; improve the quality of tourism product value chains. Along with that, focus on developing traditional industries, occupations, craft villages, and cultural characteristics of the province such as Dinh Yen mat weaving, Long Hau boat building, Long Khanh robe weaving, etc. to serve sightseeing and experience activities.

According to Ms. Le Thi Hai Chau, General Secretary of Phu Quoc Tourism Investment and Development Association, although tourism has recovered, its development is in an inappropriate trend, not really stable and sustainable due to the impact of the difficult global economic situation, natural disasters... occurring in some countries and territories around the world. The biggest difficulty for Phu Quoc tourism is domestic flights and the high airfares.

To improve Phu Quoc tourism in particular and Kien Giang tourism in general, in addition to international visitors, tourism businesses in Kien Giang are offering solutions to stimulate domestic tourism, policies such as: Combo airfares, stable room rates, no surcharges; incentives, free utility services, discounts on entertainment services. Phu Quoc continues to link and cooperate with regions to develop quality tours and tourist routes to serve and attract tourists.

In 2024 and the following years, An Giang province will focus on implementing synchronous solutions to accelerate effective and sustainable tourism development in the province. Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of An Giang province, Nguyen Trung Thanh, said that the provincial tourism industry will continue to invest in and upgrade tourist areas, local festivals, and tourism services, creating cultural diversity and characteristics to attract tourists. At the same time, linking tourism development between An Giang and other provinces and cities in the region and the whole country...

In reality, to stimulate domestic tourism, each province and city in the Southwest needs to pay attention and implement it synchronously; it needs consensus and positivity from the business community and tourism service establishments. Stimulus programs need to be diverse in form, suitable for each target group. More importantly, localities need to not only see the potential and advantages in tourism development, but also need to clearly point out the limitations and shortcomings in the tourism industry.

With its own characteristics, the tourism industry in the Mekong Delta has been gradually invested in and developed in association with protecting the ecological environment, preserving and promoting indigenous culture. Many solutions to stimulate tourism are focused on fundamentally, helping tourists have more experiences and show responsibility for the land and people here...

In the first six months of 2024, tourism activities in the Mekong Delta region have made quite good progress. Specifically, the total number of visitors is estimated at more than 29.9 million, an increase of 11.20% over the same period in 2023; total revenue from tourism activities is more than 34,871 billion VND, an increase of more than 33% over the same period in 2023...
