(NLDO) - In January 2025, the number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan reached 50,400, an increase of 13% over the same period last year.
This is the information given by Mr. Uchida Shusuke, Deputy Chief Representative of the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) in Vietnam, at the seminar on Japanese tourism in 2025 held in Ho Chi Minh City on March 7.
This is one of the activities within the framework of the 10th Vietnam - Japan Festival which will take place from March 8 and 9 in Ho Chi Minh City.
Ms. Matsumoto Fumi, Chief Representative of the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) in Vietnam, said that in January 2025, the number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan reached 50,400, an increase of 13% over the same period last year, continuing to grow positively.
Previously, the number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan in 2024 increased by 8.2% to 621,100 arrivals, surpassing the record of 2023.
"Although the number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan is increasing, up to 80% of foreign visitors have never been to Japan before, and tourism products are still mainly focused on exploiting traditional destinations. This leads to concerns about overcrowding in some areas in major cities as well as in famous tourist attractions," said Ms. Matsumoto Fumi.
Cherry blossom season in March and April every year in Japan attracts a lot of Vietnamese tourists.
A noteworthy piece of information, according to Mr. Uchida Shusuke, is that if divided by the purpose of Vietnamese visitors to Japan, tourism accounts for only 30%, business trips account for 6% and other purposes (study abroad, internships, trainees...) account for 64%.
Vietnamese tourists also mainly travel during the cherry blossom peak season in March and April and the red leaf season in October and November every year. The following seasons are usually low season, with few visitors. Therefore, the Japanese tourism industry is trying to promote and attract visitors during the low season.
"Each foreign visitor to Japan spends about 227,000 yen, while Vietnamese visitors spend about 219,000 yen, lower than the average. And most of the spending is on shopping in this market," said Mr. Uchida Shusuke.

On the other hand, Ms. Bui Thi Ngoc Hieu, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism, said that in 2024, Vietnam welcomed 711,464 tourists from Japan, of which Ho Chi Minh City welcomed 348,239.
Japanese tourists ranked among the top 6 international tourist markets to Ho Chi Minh City. Vietnam was also among the top 10 international tourist markets to Japan last year, according to data from the Japan Tourism Agency.
"The convenience of transportation within the city thanks to the development of metro line 1, the convenience of flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Japan with a frequency of about 18 flights per day by airlines such as Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines... will be the conditions for the two countries in general and Ho Chi Minh City in particular to continue to promote tourism development" - Ms. Ngoc Hieu said.
