With a design length of about 103 meters and a weight of 9,200 tons, the new research vessel can carry 80 people and travel at a speed of about 30 kilometers per hour, covering a distance of 27,780 kilometers, CGTN reported on June 25. The ship was built by Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI), and is expected to be completed and begin operating at sea in 2025.

As a multi-purpose vessel, the new vehicle can navigate the sea, conduct manned deep-sea diving missions, explore the deep sea, provide comprehensive operational support, and safely carry heavy cargo. It can also conduct marine surveys in the polar regions in the summer. Both the bow and stern of the vessel are capable of breaking ice.

Experts expect the ship to bring back samples and environmental data needed to study issues related to deep-sea geology, environment and life sciences, and to support underwater operations for deep-sea archaeology. Core deep-sea equipment and technology can also be tested on board.

The multipurpose research vessel will be equipped with self-developed systems, making technological breakthroughs in overall vessel design, intelligent control and temperature compensation. The new vehicle will be of great significance in enhancing China's capabilities in deep-sea activities, such as archaeological research and deep-sea diving with or without a crew.
