Chinese ballistic missile submarine suddenly surfaced in Taiwan Strait

Taiwanese media released images of a Chinese submarine, which experts say is a Type 094 Jin-class submarine capable of carrying ballistic missiles equipped with nuclear warheads.

The image was taken by a Taiwanese fishing boat in the early morning of June 18, about 200 km off the west coast of the island, according to Reuters.

When asked about the submarine, Mr. Gu Lap Hung, head of Taiwan's defense agency, said he had received intelligence about the incident, but refused to provide details about the case.

The reason behind the Chinese ballistic missile submarine surfacing is unclear.

China's Ministry of Defense has not commented on the above information.

Ballistic missile submarines are not designed to attack ships, but instead launch missiles at targets on land.

Taiwan's P-3C Orion anti-submarine aircraft squadron is based at Pingtung Air Base in the south of the island, easily operating in the area south of the Taiwan Strait.

In a related development, Taiwan announced on the same day that as of the morning of June 18, it had detected 20 military aircraft and 7 ships around the island in the past 24 hours.
