Of the Chinese military aircraft, 23 flew south of Taiwan through the Bashi Channel, which separates Taiwan from the Philippines, and then along Taiwan's east coast, according to a map released by Taiwan's Defense Ministry. At least 11 crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait.
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said on September 25 that Chinese aircraft were conducting long-range missions around Taiwan. A security source familiar with the situation confirmed that these flights were part of China’s annual military exercises, according to Reuters.
According to the source, the Chinese military is conducting simulated attacks in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea, to practice anti-access to "prevent foreign support" in the event of a conflict in the region.
China's Defense Ministry has not responded to a request for comment, according to Reuters.
Why are 3 Chinese aircraft carriers increasing their activities?
The last time China held large-scale military exercises around Taiwan was in late May, shortly after Taiwanese leader Lai Ching-te took office.
China considers Taiwan an inseparable part of its territory and does not rule out the use of force to reunify.
Mr. Lai believes that only the Taiwanese people can decide their future, and has repeatedly proposed negotiations with Beijing but has been rejected, according to Reuters.
