Strengthening basic science human resources

Basic science plays a very important role in the development of humanity in general and of each country in particular.

According to the assessment results of a number of scientists at the National Workshop "Basic Science with National Responsibility", organized by the two Universities of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Vietnam National University , Hanoi and the Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City on December 9, 2024 in Hanoi, some fields of basic science (KHCB) of Vietnam have reached international standards, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and computer science. However, the contributions of KHCB of Vietnam to the overall socio-economic development are still limited.

Meanwhile, basic universities face many difficulties in recruiting students. Some majors can only recruit a few students in a year, because most students now choose majors such as business and management, computer and information technology, engineering technology, humanities and health, etc.

In the PISA assessments of 2012, 2015 and 2018, Vietnamese students were highly rated in science (always ranked 8th among participating countries and territories). This is an achievement for Vietnamese education. However, according to international experts, Vietnam has high achievements in science, or in international Olympia competitions, but few students become scientists.

This is also what General Secretary To Lam and domestic scientists are concerned about. According to the General Secretary, countries are very interested in basic science and technology to create artificial intelligence , technology, quantum biology, especially from which scientists can be trained; while in Vietnam, few people study basic science and technology, mainly going into business administration, finance and banking.

In the era of Industry 4.0, the demand for human resources in the field of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) is very large, but the rate of students studying STEM in Vietnam is very low compared to other countries. According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, the scale and rate of university students studying STEM fields (calculated on the total number of students) are lower than some countries in the region and Europe. This rate in Vietnam ranges from 27 - 30%, specifically in 2021 it reached approximately 28%; meanwhile, in Singapore it is 46%, Malaysia 50%, Korea 35%, Finland 36%, Germany 39%. In particular, for natural sciences and mathematics, the rate of students studying in Vietnam is only approximately 1.5%, equal to 1/3 compared to Finland, 1/4 compared to Korea and 1/5 compared to Singapore and Germany.

In order for science and technology to make a great contribution to the country's development in the new era - the era of national development, it is necessary to simultaneously carry out many solutions.

First of all, it is necessary to widely communicate in society the role of basic science as the foundation for creating technology, engineering, and applications for national development. Basic science affects training, and many basic scientists are also applied scientists. Second, the Government needs to invest adequately in basic science research, ensuring that basic scientists not only satisfy their passion for knowledge discovery but also ensure a full life . Third, the Government, businesses, and universities need to have large investment policies to train basic science majors. Students in these majors enjoy preferential policies like pedagogy. In addition, universities should contact businesses and research institutes to ensure jobs for students in these majors...
