Classic children's literature Papelucho released in Vietnamese translation

On December 20, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Education Publishing House, in collaboration with the Chilean Embassy in Vietnam, launched a translation of the classic Chilean children's literature work - 'Papelucho'. This is part of a cultural project organized by these two units.

At the launching ceremony, Mr. Pham Vinh Thai, Editor-in-Chief of Vietnam Education Publishing House, said that on October 31, Vietnam Education Publishing House and the Chilean Embassy in Vietnam held a signing ceremony for a cultural cooperation agreement and translation of the work Papelucho from Spanish to Vietnamese. This cooperation is considered a new milestone in the relationship between the two sides, helping to introduce and spread the unique features of Chilean culture and education to Vietnam.

In a short time, today, the first translation of Papelucho has been completed by a team of translators from the Spanish Department, Hanoi University with the support of editors from the Vietnam Education Publishing House and Embassy staff.

Translator Nguyen Thuy Trang, lecturer at Hanoi University (2nd from right), representative of the group of authors translating the Papelucho series, shares about the content of the series.

After the translation launch ceremony, the publisher representative said that they will start editing and publishing to bring the entire 12-volume series of inspirational and humane stories to readers starting in January 2025.

At the ceremony, Chilean Ambassador Sergio Narea Guzman shared the first translation marking the completion of the cultural project carried out by the Chilean Embassy this year, under the auspices of the Directorate General for Culture, Arts, Heritage and Public Diplomacy (DIRAC) of the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the cooperation of the Vietnam Education Publishing House.

"I am extremely happy that the book that I have known since childhood is now available in Hanoi and translated into Vietnamese for the first time, warmly received by the Vietnam Education Publishing House and I believe that readers will also favor it when it is published. I am absolutely convinced that this publication will be an important milestone in connecting and understanding the cultures between Vietnam and Chile," the Chilean Ambassador shared.

Papelucho is an 8-year-old boy in the book series of the same name by author Marcela Paz. He has a secret that he thinks is terrible and cannot be told to anyone, so he decides to write that secret in his diary.

His diary of experiences and reflections created a series of 12 books published between 1947 and 1974 and two posthumous books published in 2017. The Papelucho series became a classic of Chilean children's literature and culture, translated into many languages.

Author Marcela Paz (1902-1985), real name Ester Huneeus Salas de Claro, was a famous Chilean writer and sculptor. She was one of the founders of the Association for the Protection of the Blind Cerro Santa Lucía in Santiago, Chile when she was 18 years old.

Marcela Paz was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Honorary Prize in Amriswil, Switzerland in 1968; the Chilean National Prize for Literature in 1982. For Marcela Paz, "children always love new things. They are innocent, pure, happy and curious, always eager to learn everything".
