IMPRESSIVE CURRICULUM
Before signing a contract with the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), Mr. Falko Goetz (born in 1962) knew that the pressure on him was not small, when his predecessor, coach Henrique Calisto, had led the Vietnamese team to the AFF Cup 2008 championship and the 25th SEA Games runner-up in 2009. However, the German coach still believed that he would do something to bring big changes to Vietnamese football.
That confidence comes first from his impressive resume. Falko Goetz was a famous player of the former East Germany, having played for many famous European clubs such as Bayer Leverkusen (won the UEFA Cup in the 1987-1988 season), FC Cologne (Bundesliga runner-up in the 1989-1990 season), Galatasaray (Türkiye, won the double of national championship and League Cup in the 1993-1994 season). As a coach, he helped Hertha Berlin (Germany) win 7th place in the Bundesliga. He also has a German professional coaching certificate and is a member of the group specializing in developing youth player training methods of the German Football Association. That is enough to make his profile "sparkle" and VFF is very confident that the German partner will create a miracle in Vietnam.
Mr. Falko Goetz has many memories with Vietnamese football.
BRAVELY USING YOUNG FACTORS TO EAT DETERMINEDLY , HOANG THINH ...
In fact, coach Falko Goetz also had a good start in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers when he and the Vietnamese team won 2 matches against Macau with a final score of 13-1. Although they lost to Qatar in the second round with a score of 0-3 in the first leg, the 2-1 victory in the second leg at My Dinh Stadium helped the Vietnamese team to be praised for their tight, scientific playing style and strong fighting spirit until the last minute.
After that, Mr. Falko Goetz also impressed in two other competitions when he led the U.23 Vietnam team to third place in the Ho Chi Minh City Football Cup in 2011, behind the Korean Student team and the U.17 Aspire team (Qatar); won the VFF Cup runner-up position in 2011 (Uzbekistan U.23 team won), including a draw with Malaysia and a big win over Myanmar. The important thing is that after each tournament, although there are still different comments from experts, in general, everyone sees that the shape of the teams under the hands of Mr. Goetz has significant changes. That is, he brought a series of new talents into the U.23 squad to help them mature, such as Nguyen Van Quyet, Ngo Hoang Thinh, Le Van Thang, Hoang Dinh Tung, Le Hoang Thien, Lam Anh Quang, Tran Buu Ngoc. He also cherished turning these talents into the core of the team for the long-term plan of the AFF Cup 2012, the qualifying round for the London Olympics 2012.
Former player Pham Thanh Luong said: "I was lucky to play under Mr. Goetz. I learned a lot from him about his scientific nature, high ability to demonstrate and his dedicated and professional working attitude. He was very serious and sometimes aloof, but hidden behind that coldness was a strong personality and he was very willing to impart new knowledge to us. He always performed exercises with impeccable ball handling, showing off many skillful ways to control the ball, without any unnecessary movements. In general, players and later coaches like us learned a lot about the coaching style and the steady and flexible approach to the game from a coach from Europe like him."
C PROACTIVELY RESIGNED AFTER BITTER FAILURE
Mr. Goetz's journey started off well, but it all went up in smoke after the shocking defeat at the 26th SEA Games in 2011 in Indonesia. The U.23 Vietnam team started very well when they beat the U.23 Philippines 3-1, defeated U.23 Timor Leste 2-0, Laos 3-1, Brunei 8-0 and drew with Myanmar 0-0. But tragedy began to strike from the semi-final match where they lost 0-2 to the host team and the biggest disappointment was the third-place match where they lost 1-4 to Myanmar, the team that Vietnam had beaten 5-0 a few months earlier! When U.23 Vietnam lost, Mr. Goetz of course took the main responsibility, but behind that there were many behind-the-scenes stories that pushed the German coach to leave Vietnamese football sooner than planned.
A former assistant of coach Falko Goetz recounted: "Vietnamese football under coach Calisto won the runner-up position at the 25th SEA Games in 2009, so when the German coach came to Vietnam, he put pressure on himself and set a goal of at least reaching the final of the 26th SEA Games in 2011. From the pressure on himself, he also put a lot of pressure on each member of the team. He always required each player to play well and concentrate in each match, avoiding complacency and subjectivity. However, the 0-0 draw in the group stage against Myanmar made him furious. Mr. Goetz became hot-tempered, appeared grumpy, and made a few uncontrolled statements. But after receiving sincere advice, he immediately changed. He became more calm, more composed, and rarely got angry. It's just a pity that he couldn't contribute more to Vietnamese football as he and the VFF wanted."
After the failure at the 26th SEA Games, Coach Falko Goetz resigned and only received 3 months of compensation (66,000 USD). When he left, there was division within the VFF, some blamed his poor command of the team, and the players lacked fire in the last 2 matches. Some sympathized, saying that Coach Falko Goetz did not fully understand Vietnamese football, so his philosophy was not thoroughly accepted and comprehended. As for Mr. Goetz himself, he was disappointed with himself and with the self-respect of a man, of a professional coach, he decided to terminate his contract with the VFF early. (to be continued)
