According to the Open Doors 2024 report released by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in collaboration with the US Department of State, the number of international students in the US in the 2023-2024 academic year has reached a record high, with more than 1.1 million students, an increase of 6.6% over the previous year.

During the last academic year, more than 298,000 new international students enrolled in the United States. This growth demonstrates the enduring appeal of the United States to students around the world.
For the first time since 2009, India took the top spot with more than 331,000 students studying in the US, up 23.3% from the previous year. Meanwhile, the number of Chinese students fell 4.2% to more than 277,000, but China retained its second place.
Mathematics and computer science, engineering, economics and management continue to be the top choices for international students. Of these, the number of students studying mathematics and computer science reached nearly 281,000, followed by engineering with more than 210,000.
Vietnam currently has 22,066 students studying at universities and colleges in the US, up 0.8% compared to the previous school year. This number helps Vietnam maintain its 6th position in the list of countries with the most international students in the US, accounting for 2% of the total number of international students.
Vietnamese students continue to choose the US as their destination thanks to its top-quality education, diverse learning environment, and career development opportunities. The fields that Vietnamese students prioritize include economics, management, engineering, and information technology.
The report also highlights the important role of international students in the US economy, contributing more than $50 billion last year.
This is an important resource not only for universities but also for supporting economic sectors such as real estate, services and technology.
According to IIE, the number of international students in the US will continue to grow in the coming years, thanks to open-door policies and support programs such as expanded STEM visas and career priorities for international students after graduation.
