International education consultancy Acumen cited UNESCO statistics showing that Vietnam had more than 132,000 international students in the 2021-2022 period. Followed by Malaysia and Indonesia, each with more than 56,000 international students, and Thailand with 32,000 international students.
The top two destinations for Vietnamese students are Japan (more than 44,100) and South Korea (nearly 25,000). Meanwhile, Indonesians, Malaysians and Thais move most to the UK and Australia. In the US market, Vietnamese students also lead Southeast Asia, with more than 23,100.
Among the 5 countries with the most Vietnamese students are Australia (more than 14,100) and Canada (nearly 9,000).

According to Nikkei Asia , in the US, Vietnam has been in the top 10 sources of international students for more than a decade. According to official data in 2022, Vietnam ranked 5th in the number of students studying in this country.
ICEF Monitor, an international education information site, confirmed that Vietnam is among the world's top 10 markets for studying abroad. Vietnamese students are in the top 5 in the number of international students in the US, 2nd in Japan, 6th in Australia and leading in Taiwan.
The trend of Vietnamese students studying abroad is so popular that universities from Finland to South Korea count Vietnam as the country with the largest proportion of students. The US Congress even launched a scholarship program, the Vietnam Education Foundation (VEF), in 2003 to attract students.
According to Nikkei Asia , after more than two decades of sending students to study abroad programs, Vietnam is now “harvesting.” The first generations of overseas students have graduated and gone to work, often abroad, and now they are bringing that experience back to Vietnam when their careers are ripe.
The UNESCO report did not mention China, but it is also considered a top destination for Southeast Asian students. The Chinese government has not released international enrolment data since 2020, but in 2019, the country hosted 28,600 Thai students, 15,000 Indonesian students, 11,300 Vietnamese students and 9,500 Malaysian students.
