Accordingly, the specific program will, through study and research, develop the skills and knowledge of scholarship recipients to create change and contribute to building sustainable relations between the people of the two countries.
At the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit in March 2024, the Australian Foreign Minister announced a further five-year commitment to support the resilience and prosperity of the Mekong subregion through the Mekong-Australia Partnership (MAP).
The aim of MAP is to support an inclusive and resilient Mekong subregion, working together to find solutions to common and transboundary challenges.
From 2026, MAP will provide scholarships to citizens of Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Lao PDR and Myanmar to pursue a Research Master’s or Applied Master’s degree in MAP’s focus areas. MAP’s priority research areas include: Water Security, Climate Action, Transnational Crime, Economic Resilience and Subregional Integration, and Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI).

Apply for Scholarship
MAP recipients will be able to participate in a skills development program: the Mekong Leadership Network. This dynamic program includes activities, events and development opportunities to foster lasting connections among MAP recipients in the Mekong subregion, thereby cultivating a collaborative workforce and laying the foundation for building a strong alumni network in the future.
The MAP Scholarship provides the opportunity for citizens of Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar to study a Masters by Research or Masters by Applied Research at an Australian university.
The benefits of the MAP scholarship are the same as those of the Australia Awards Scholarships (AAS), in addition, MAP scholarship recipients also have the opportunity to participate in specific skills development activities through the Mekong Subregion Leadership Network.
The application process and online portal for the Australia Awards Scholarships also apply to the MAP Scholarships. Applicants can apply for the MAP Scholarship if they choose to study or research in one of the above focus areas. Applicants can also apply for both the Australia Awards Scholarship and the MAP Scholarship at the same time.
Candidates wishing to receive a MAP scholarship must clearly state their scholarship eligibility in their application.
Applicants will be assessed on their professional and personal qualities, academic ability, relevance of their course/research to MAP focus areas, and potential to contribute to common solutions to current and future challenges in the Mekong sub-region.
The program strongly encourages women and people with disabilities to apply for scholarships.
Citizens of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar must follow the correct application process for Australia Awards Scholarships for their country. For more information, please visit the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Australia Awards Scholarships website.
