Durian continues to increase strongly?

Forecast for durian prices on July 2, 2024, Ri6 durian prices and Thai durian prices in the Southwest region will increase slightly. Durian prices are showing signs of increasing slightly again. Durian exports in May reached 450 million USD, up 107% compared to the previous month and 34% compared to the same period last year.

In the first 5 months of the year, the export value of this item reached 919 million USD, an increase of more than 74% compared to the same period last year, according to statistics from the Customs. Durian continues to lead the export turnover in the group of exported fruits and vegetables. Currently, durian turnover is 3.5 times higher than that of dragon fruit, the fruit that used to hold the leading position in the group of exported fruits and vegetables.

Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, said that China is still steadily increasing its purchases of Vietnamese durian. It is estimated that in June, the amount of durian exported will reach 600 million USD, bringing the total turnover in the first 6 months of the year to 1.5 billion USD.

According to Mr. Nguyen, Vietnamese durian has the advantage of abundant output, harvested all year round, and at many times does not directly compete with Thai durian. The shipping time is fast and the price is reasonable, especially when frozen durian has better quality control.

Previously, the price of durian today, July 2, was highest in the Southwest and Southeast regions and lowest in the Central Highlands. The price at the garden will be 3,000 - 5,000 VND/kg lower than the updated price at the warehouse, depending on how the trader buys, buying in bulk or choosing the price.

In the Southwest region, the price of durian today increased slightly compared to yesterday for Thai durian. The beautiful Ri6 durian variety reached 60,000 - 62,000 VND/kg and the Ri6 durian variety reached 50,000 - 52,000 VND/kg; the beautiful Thai durian was at 92,000 - 95,000 VND/kg; the Thai durian variety was at 72,000 - 75,000 VND/kg, continuing to increase slightly compared to the previous session.

For durian in the Southeast region, the price increased slightly compared to yesterday. Specifically, the purchase price at the warehouse, Ri6 beautiful durian is 60,000 - 62,000 VND/kg and Ri6 durian in bucket has a purchase price of 50,000 - 52,000 VND/kg; Thai durian beautiful is at 92,000 - 95,000 VND/kg; meanwhile, Thai durian in bucket is at 72,000 - 75,000 VND/kg.

Meanwhile, in the Central Highlands, the price of beautiful Ri6 durian is at 58,000 - 60,000 VND/kg and Ri6 durian in bucket is at 48,000 - 50,000 VND/kg; beautiful Thai durian is at 90,000 - 92,000 VND/kg; Thai durian in bucket is at 48,000 - 50,000 VND/kg.

Depending on the length of the shipping route or shipping area, the price of durian will vary more or less.

Indonesia has plans to conduct further research on the plant variety and expand the cultivation area.

Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, who is also the country's coordinator for cooperation with China, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, recently said that the potential export value of durian to China could be as high as 8 billion USD.

In 2022, according to a report by the Indonesian Ministry of Trade, the country exported durian to China with a value of up to 4.5 billion USD and in 2023, the value increased to 6.7 billion USD. Meanwhile, in the Chinese market, the demand for foreign fruits is increasing, especially durian, but Indonesia's market share of this item is not commensurate.

The Indonesian government has implemented a number of measures to promote the plan to achieve this potential growth target, Minister Luhut also said. Indonesia has reached an agreement with the Beijing Gene Research Institute to conduct a study to ensure high-quality durian for export.

In addition, the Indonesian government has also built about 100 hectares of durian plantations in the provinces of North Sumatra and West Papua and is planning to build them in other provinces, including Central Sulawesi. These locations are believed to be suitable for growing durian trees to meet the import standards of the Chinese market.

According to the Indonesian Bureau of Statistics, in 2023, Indonesia produced up to 1.85 million tons of durian, of which over 50% of the total output came from the island of Java. As the largest durian producer in the country, East Java province achieved an output of more than 480,000 tons last year.

The Indonesian government has been urging local farmers to grow durian for years as the fruit has become a valuable commodity. Oil palm growers across the country five years ago have been urged by President Joko Widodo to plant durian and start a business, believing it has better prospects in the international market than crude palm oil.
