"In the immediate future, Hanoi is making great efforts to implement urban railway line No. 2, section 2.1, however, the project is still having to request adjustments to its investment policy. The investment project to build urban railway line No. 2, section 2.1 Nam Thang Long - Tran Hung Dao is a national key project of Hanoi, using ODA capital from Japan," said a representative of the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board.
According to Giao Thong Newspaper, the project's feasibility study report was approved by the City People's Committee in Decision No. 2054. The total length of the route is about 11.5km; the elevated section is about 2.6km long; the underground section is about 8.9km long; the Depot area is 17.5ha wide in Xuan Dinh ward, Bac Tu Liem district.
The starting point of the route is at Nam Thang Long Urban Area, following Nguyen Van Huyen extended road - Hoang Quoc Viet - Hoang Hoa Tham - Thuy Khue - Phan Dinh Phung - Hang Giay - Hang Duong - Hang Ngang - Hang Dao - Dinh Tien Hoang - Hang Bai - the end point is at the intersection of Hue - Nguyen Du streets. The entire route has 10 stations including 3 stations and 7 underground stations.
Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Planning and Investment Le Trung Hieu shared: "Urban railway line No. 2 is one of the most urgent routes that need investment at present. The line is not only significant in terms of traffic and environment but also plays an important role in tourism and urban architecture of Hanoi".
The leader of the Department of Planning and Investment expressed and added that the urban railway line No. 2 also connects with half of Hanoi's urban railway network according to the newly built expansion project (with 15 lines). Therefore, the research on investment in the construction of line No. 2 can be considered the top urgent task for Hanoi.
At the same time, according to Mr. Hieu, Hanoi has also planned urban railway line No. 6: Ngoc Hoi - Noi Bai with a total length of 43km, expected to be completed in 2035. This will also be the main line connecting Noi Bai International Airport with the second airport, the southern urban area of the city. With lines No. 2 and 6, Noi Bai airport will be closely linked to the entire urban railway network of the city.
Traffic expert, Master Vu Hoang Chung shared: "The planning is already in place, recently important legal corridors such as the revised Capital Law, the 2024 Land Law... have also been passed. Hanoi needs to quickly concretize the planning, turning the desire of millions of people in the capital to have an urban railway connecting to the airport into reality."
Noi Bai International Airport is the second largest airport in the country in terms of passenger volume (nearly 30 million passengers in 2023).
The means of transport connecting this airport, which is the largest in the country, to Hanoi and the Capital Region are still private cars, taxis, passenger vans and only 2 bus routes. During every holiday and Tet, the risk of traffic jams right at the airport is always present, causing difficulties for both locals and international tourists.
