In August 1954, Hai Yen commune was divided into two communes, Hai Yen and Hai Thuong. During this period, Nghi Son village belonged to Hai Thuong commune.

In 1984, Hai Thuong commune was divided into 3 communes: Nghi Son, Hai Thuong and Hai Ha. Since then, Nghi Son commune was formed and has been stable until today.

According to the leaders of Nghi Son commune, since ancient times, the commune's traditional economy has mainly been exploitation, fishing, aquaculture, seafood farming and marine logistics services.

Previously, Nghi Son was isolated, people who wanted to go to the island or the mainland had to go by boat. Later, when the commune was separated and the seaport developed, there was a mountain road to the commune.

According to the leader of Nghi Son commune, although the commune's terrain is difficult, it is formed by two main mountains, Ngoc Son in the North and Nghi Son in the South. The Northeast is called the East Beach area, with flat terrain with long sandy beaches and beautiful beaches. Therefore, the sea area here has many advantages in exploiting seaports and developing marine tourism.

In addition, the commune has a main road connecting to provincial road 513 and connecting to the deep-water port in the North - South direction, 5km long, with a sea area of about 1km2, this is the shelter of hundreds of boats after fishing trips.
