Colleagues mourn musician Lu Nhat Vu - author of "Song of the Southern Land"

Musician Tran The Bao, singer Nguyen Phi Hung and many colleagues mourned the passing of musician Lu Nhat Vu - author of "Song of the Southern Land" after a period of treatment for old-age diseases.

According to information from his family, musician Lu Nhat Vu passed away at 9:30 am on March 29 at People's Hospital 115 after many months of treatment for old age-related diseases. He was 90 years old.

The funeral and viewing ceremony took place on the morning of March 30, the late musician's coffin was brought to the Southern National Funeral Home (Go Vap District). The memorial service took place at 7:00 a.m. on March 31, the burial ceremony took place at 7:30 a.m. at Binh Duong Flower Garden Cemetery.

Hearing the news of musician Lu Nhat Vu's passing, many friends and colleagues expressed their condolences and missed the musician.

Director Tran Tri emotionally said that he is still unfinished with the concert honoring the couple Lu Nhat Vu - Le Giang.

"I hope to soon make it as a gift to commemorate the talented musician with traditional revolutionary Vietnamese music," the director shared.

Singer Nguyen Phi Hung expressed: "Grateful to musician Lu Nhat Vu, a talented musician who passed away, leaving behind songs that will forever resonate."

Xam artist Nguyen Quang Long confided: "He left behind a huge research career on Southern folk music, especially folk songs. Many popular folk songs today are thanks to his collection."

Musician Tran The Bao confided: "Deeply mourning the talented musician, author of The Saigon Girl Who Carries Ammunition, Song of the Southern Land and many research works and anthologies of Southern folk songs. My condolences to poet Le Giang and his family, and I hope musician Lu Nhat Vu will rest in peace."

Musician Lu Nhat Vu's real name is Le Van Gat, born in 1936 in Binh Duong. After graduating from the Vietnam Music School (now the Vietnam National Academy of Music) in 1962, he worked at the Southern Song and Dance Troupe, the Liberation Arts Agency, and the Institute of Music Research.

He is the father of famous songs such as: "Song of the Southern Land", "Saigon Girl Carrying Ammunition", "Please Rest Assured, Mom", "Afternoon on the Meo Village"...

Among them, the most prominent is the song "Song of the Southern Land" co-composed by him and his wife - writer and poet Le Giang. The song was first released in 1997, and was the theme song of the TV series "Southern Land" (directed by Nguyen Vinh Son) performed by singer To Thanh Phuong.

He is also the author of a series of research works on Southern folk songs such as: "Understanding Southern folk songs" (1983), "Vietnamese folk songs in the South" (1986), "Music and Life" (1989), "300 Southern folk melodies" (2002), "Ho in Vietnamese folk songs" (2004), "Vietnamese lullabies" (2005), "Ly in Vietnamese folk songs" (2006), "Speaking poetry - Speaking verse - Southern poetic poetry" (2010), "Liberation march" (2011), "Looking for invisible treasures" (2014), "Vi vu tinh doi" (2022)...

In 2009, he was recognized by the Vietnam Book of Records Center as "Musician with many works in collecting and researching Vietnamese folk music genres".

He was awarded the Ho Chi Minh City Literature and Arts Award in 1997-1998 for the work "Southern Land" (lyrics: poet Le Giang), the Huynh Van Nghe Award (Binh Duong, 2005), the Good Book Award for the research and collection of "Liberation March" (awarded by the Vietnam Publishing Association in 2012), and the 5th Nguyen Thong Literature and Arts Award (2017).

Musician Lu Nhat Vu was awarded the State Prize for Literature and Arts, first term (2001), the First Class Anti-American Medal, the Second Class Victory Medal, and the First Class Labor Medal.
