DNVN - The geographical indication "Nam O" has just been granted a protection certificate by the Department of Intellectual Property as the first geographical indication of Da Nang City, and is one of three geographical indications for fish sauce products nationwide (including Phu Quoc fish sauce, Phan Thiet fish sauce and Nam O fish sauce).
On the afternoon of June 27, the Department of Science and Technology of Da Nang and the People's Committee of Lien Chieu District held a ceremony to announce the decision and receive the certificate of geographical indication "Nam O" for Da Nang's fish sauce products; at the same time, celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Nam O fish sauce making profession being recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Lien Chieu District People's Committee received the certificate of protection of geographical indication "Nam O" for fish sauce products of Da Nang city.
On June 3, 2024, the geographical indication “Nam O” for Da Nang City’s fish sauce products was officially granted a protection certificate by the National Office of Intellectual Property under Decision 437/QD-SHTT. This is the first geographical indication of Da Nang City and is one of three geographical indications for fish sauce products nationwide (including Phu Quoc fish sauce, Phan Thiet fish sauce and Nam O fish sauce).
The People's Committee of Lien Chieu District was granted the right to manage and develop the geographical indication "Nam O" by the People's Committee of Da Nang City. The geographical indication "Nam O" for protected fish sauce products represents recognition of the prestige, reputation, quality and origin of the product, helping to enhance the brand value of the community.
“This is also an important legal basis for Nam O traditional fish sauce production and trading establishments to enhance their reputation, develop the market, protect the value of quality and origin of traditional fish sauce products with a history of hundreds of years, enhance competitiveness, and create conditions for traditional fish sauce products to be widely consumed in the domestic market and exported,” Vice Chairwoman of Da Nang City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Anh Thi emphasized.
According to Mr. Tran Le Hong - Deputy Director of the Department of Intellectual Property, granting geographical indication for Nam O fish sauce is an important first step. That is the tool in hand, but how to use that tool effectively depends on the work that needs to be done in the future.
Mr. Tran Le Hong suggested that Lien Chieu district and Nam O fish sauce traditional craft village association need to develop synchronous and effective solutions on production organization and quality control organization to develop local specialty products in general and Nam O fish sauce geographical indication in particular.
In particular, it is necessary to perfect the management and control process of geographical indications to preserve the quality and reputation of the products.
“This is an important step, deciding the success of a geographical indication and requires the efforts of the entire system, from producers to managers,” Mr. Hong emphasized.
