Fried toothpicks are popular on social networks.
Reuters reported on January 25 that the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) has urged people not to eat toothpicks made from starch and fried, after this trend "stormed" social networks.
Several short social media videos showing people eating deep-fried toothpicks with condiments like powdered cheese have attracted thousands of shares and likes on TikTok and Instagram.
"Their safety as food has not been verified. Please do not eat them," MFDS advised on social media X.
MFDS also added that videos of toothpicks being fried in oil for eating are going viral online.
Food coloring used to color toothpicks green made from sweet potato or corn starch is considered environmentally friendly and biodegradable.
Commonly used in Korean restaurants, these toothpicks are also used to pin finger foods.
Online eating shows, known as “mukbang,” which often feature people eating too much or unusual food, are popular in South Korea. “It’s so crispy,” one person shared on TikTok, in a clip of him eating fried toothpicks.
