On March 18, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) held a ceremony to announce the publication of the monograph "50 years of Vietnam - Japan relations (1973 - 2023)", comprehensively introducing the history of bilateral relations.

At the ceremony, Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Ito Naoki emphasized: “In 2023, Japan-Vietnam relations have developed into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia and the World. To continue promoting Japan-Vietnam relations in the future, the lessons learned from 50 years of history recorded in this book will become an important compass”. Meanwhile, Vice President of VASS Dang Xuan Thanh affirmed: “This book not only summarizes the events of the past 50 years of Japan-Vietnam relations but is also a valuable academic document for researchers and educators of both countries”.
In the coming time, the book will be given free of charge to key universities and research institutes in Vietnam through the Northeast Asian Research Institute, with the expectation of effectively supporting teaching and research.

JICA launched the "JICA Chair" program in 2020 with the aim of sharing experiences and lessons from Japan's modernization process and development cooperation with developing countries. The program targets leading universities in partner countries, and in Vietnam, the program has been implemented since 2021. The project to publish a monograph on the history of Vietnam-Japan relations by the Northeast Asian Studies Institute (VASS) is part of this program.
The monograph is compiled with consideration of the international relations context of the world and the Asian region, dividing the history of Vietnam - Japan relations in the past 50 years (1973 - 2023) into three periods. The book provides an overview from the political - diplomatic, economic, and socio-cultural perspectives, and mentions the achievements, prospects, challenges, as well as policy implications in the relations between the two countries over the past 50 years.

Currently, in Vietnam, there is no comprehensive introductory document on the history of Japan-Vietnam relations. Therefore, the publication of this book is expected to contribute to expanding the source of Japanese research documents in Vietnam.
